San Francisco is unbeaten, but its offense needed a late breakthrough against Denver last Sunday. Now comes a trip to Seattle, where the Seahawks are three-point favorites despite the 49ers’ 4-0 start. The interesting question is whether Seattle can make another strong offense work for its points without giving back that advantage through the mistakes that nearly spoiled its latest win.
San Francisco’s finish was convincing. Its start wasn’t.
The 49ers beat Denver 24-14 after scoring touchdowns on three straight second-half possessions. But they had managed just three points through seven possessions before recovering a muffed punt that handed them a short field. That matters here: the final score showed San Francisco’s ability to break through, while the early struggles showed how long a good defense can keep it waiting.
Brock Purdy finished with 218 passing yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. George Kittle supplied the game-sealing 56-yard touchdown reception, and Christian McCaffrey scored on the ground. San Francisco has scored at least 24 points in each of its four games this season, so Seattle is facing an attack with several ways to find an answer.
There’s also a meaningful availability concern: Mike Evans is questionable with a ribs injury. Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reported that he was limited in Wednesday’s practice. Evans sits atop San Francisco’s receiver depth chart, making his availability worth watching, though the update doesn’t establish whether he’ll play or how his role might change.
Seattle’s advantage needs a cleaner game
Our grades give both offenses an A-, but we rate Seattle’s defense more highly: A+ compared with San Francisco’s B. Our projections also put the Seahawks at roughly 340 total yards and the 49ers at about 315. That’s a modest edge in expected offensive output for Seattle, rather than a matchup where San Francisco’s unbeaten record settles the comparison.
The counterweight is how Seattle played in its 30-23 win over the Chargers. The Seahawks led 27-6 in the third quarter but let Los Angeles back into the game. They committed 14 penalties for 150 yards, while Sam Darnold threw an interception and took three sacks. Those are concrete reasons to be cautious about treating a strong defensive grade as enough to cover the spread. Seattle also lost 33-31 at Washington the week before, so its recent results haven’t always matched that defensive strength.
Emanuel Wilson, Seattle’s lead running back, gave the Seahawks a useful answer when their passing game was uneven. He rushed for 81 yards and added 39 receiving yards, scoring once on the ground and once through the air. His production helped Seattle reach 30 points even though Darnold threw for just 168 yards. The Seahawks’ path isn’t limited to winning a quarterback duel.

What that means for the 45.5-point total
The scoring evidence pulls in both directions. San Francisco has consistently reached the mid-20s or better, and Seattle has scored at least 30 in three straight games. Those results give DraftKings’ 45.5-point total a credible route to being exceeded. But Seattle’s defensive strength and San Francisco’s long quiet stretch against Denver make it risky to assume both attacks will move smoothly from the start. Seattle held Arizona to seven points three weeks ago, another reminder that its recent scoring environments have varied considerably.
Seattle’s recent mistakes complicate the picture further: penalties can stall its own drives or extend an opponent’s, while turnovers can create short fields. The useful distinction is between sustained offensive production and points helped along by sudden changes of possession. San Francisco’s breakthrough followed a recovered muffed punt; Seattle also scored a touchdown on the play immediately after recovering one against the Chargers. Both offenses found answers, but those scoring opportunities didn’t require long drives.
The key to this matchup
Seattle has the stronger defensive case and a small projected yardage edge. San Francisco counters with an offense that has found enough answers to win all four games. The spread puts the pressure on Seattle to turn that matchup advantage into a cleaner performance, rather than surrendering it through penalties and turnovers. For the total, short fields are the biggest complication: they can push scoring past what the quality of sustained drives alone would suggest. Seattle’s execution is the thread connecting both markets.
