76ers vs. Bulls: Chicago’s defense leaves only half the scoring story

Chicago’s defense gives Philadelphia an obvious opening, but it doesn’t settle the scoring question. The Bulls have allowed at least 124 points in all eight games this season, yet five of those games finished under their posted totals. That’s the tension in Sunday’s rematch: the 76ers can find a much friendlier opponent after a miserable shooting night in Cleveland, while Chicago still has to supply enough offense to turn defensive trouble into a high-scoring game.

A chance to recover, with something to prove

Philadelphia arrives at 8-2 after a 119-95 loss to Cleveland. AP reported that the Sixers shot 36.5% from the field and made 10 of 40 threes. LeBron James finished with eight points, and Joel Embiid missed all nine of his field-goal attempts. The Cavaliers also won the rebounding battle by 14.

Philadelphia needs more than its scorers to recover their touch. Losing the rebounding battle so decisively left another way for Cleveland to take control. Against a weaker defense, the Sixers have a chance to respond, but their work at the other end still matters.

Sharpest Bets grades Philadelphia’s offense A+ and Chicago’s defense F, a stark contrast that supports the Sixers’ scoring opportunity. The other end is less lopsided in those team assessments: Philadelphia’s defense grades B-, against a B for Chicago’s offense. The Bulls still need to turn that part of the matchup into points.

The first meeting puts the total in perspective

The teams met Monday in Philadelphia, where the Sixers won 126-107. The Sixers controlled the result, but the teams’ 233 combined points stayed below that night’s 240.5 total.

Sunday’s early DraftKings snapshot lists Philadelphia as a 9.5-point favorite, with a total of 238.5. That spread asks the Sixers to establish control again, now on the road and coming off Friday’s setback. For the total, Chicago’s contribution remains a central question. The Bulls have scored 107, 105 and 99 in three of their last five games, alongside games of 111 and 127. Their defense can create scoring opportunities for an opponent without making their own attack dependable.

Philadelphia’s games have gone under in eight of ten this season; Chicago’s have gone under in five of eight. Those results came against past lines, but they reinforce the lesson from Monday: Chicago allowing plenty of points is only one part of clearing a total this high.

The Bulls’ latest loss was 135-105 at New York. AP described a game that had reached 84-52 by halftime. Avoiding another early runaway would give Chicago a better chance to make its offense matter throughout this one.

The frontcourt still needs watching

The latest frontcourt injury reports list Embiid as probable with a foot issue and Philadelphia’s Adem Bona out with a back injury. Chicago’s Nic Claxton is described as questionable with a hamstring injury, leaving his availability unsettled. Zach Collins is out with an illness, Jalen Smith is probable with a finger injury, and Tobe Awaka is questionable with a knee issue.

That uncertainty keeps the interior matchup open. Philadelphia needs a response from its scorers; Chicago needs both stops and enough scoring of its own. Watching those two jobs separately is more useful than assuming a vulnerable defense guarantees a big total.
