Jets vs. Titans Preview: A Tight Spread and Two Different Offensive Paths

The latest spread and total say there isn’t much between the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans entering Week 1. Tennessee is a 1.5-point home favorite, and the total is 38.5. The more interesting question is how these teams get their offense moving, because our projections point to two noticeably different paths.

Jets vs. Titans game details

  • Matchup: New York Jets at Tennessee Titans
  • Date and time: Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m. EDT
  • Venue: Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee
  • Latest spread: Titans -1.5 (-110); Jets +1.5 (-110)
  • Latest total: 38.5, with over -112 and under -108

Both clubs are 0-0, so this opener comes without any 2026 results to lean on. Their final 10 games last season weren’t especially encouraging: New York went 3-7, while Tennessee went 2-8. The Jets were 4-6 against the spread in that stretch, and the Titans were 5-5.

New York’s clearest route runs through the ground game

Our projections give the Jets about 139 rushing yards on roughly 28 attempts, compared with around 104 yards for Tennessee. That’s the clearest statistical edge in the matchup, and it naturally puts Breece Hall near the center of New York’s offensive outlook.

The broader grades also favor the Jets’ offense. New York carries a B- offensive grade, while Tennessee checks in at C-. Both defenses receive a D, which creates some tension with a sportsbook total below 40.

Geno Smith is listed as New York’s starting quarterback, but we project only about 152 passing yards for the Jets. The expected production is more ground-oriented than Tennessee’s rather than being built around a high-volume passing day.

Tennessee has the stronger passing projection

The Titans’ path looks different. We project Cam Ward and Tennessee for roughly 181 passing yards on about 34 attempts, compared with around 152 yards and 30 attempts for the Jets. The teams are also close in projected first downs and total yardage: New York holds a 17.6-to-16.8 edge in first downs and a roughly 291-to-285 advantage in yards.

That balance helps explain why the spread is so narrow. The Jets have the better offensive grade and a projected rushing edge, while Tennessee is at home and carries the higher passing-yard outlook. Neither team has a projected total-yardage advantage large enough to make this look one-sided.

Fresh availability notes

The latest availability report has Jets wide receiver Tim Patrick out with a groin injury and defensive end Joseph Ossai out with a foot injury. Cornerback D’Angelo Ponds is doubtful with a calf injury, while running back Kene Nwangwu is doubtful with a back injury. Tennessee linebacker Cedric Gray has been ruled out with a concussion.

How the spread and total fit the matchup

With Tennessee laying only 1.5 points, bettors are essentially making a near straight-up choice while accounting for home field. The total presents a different puzzle. Each team went over in seven of its final 10 games last season, and both defenses currently hold D grades, yet the latest number is only 38.5.

Those over results came in a different season against different opponents, so they’re context rather than a forecast. Here, the stronger matchup evidence is the contrast between New York’s projected rushing production and Tennessee’s expected passing volume. Whichever offense stays on schedule without asking too much of its quarterback should have the cleaner route through a close game.
