Padres vs. Dodgers preview: Can San Diego pressure the favorite again?

The Dodgers remain clear moneyline favorites in Thursday night’s series finale, but the matchup looks less comfortable after San Diego’s 5-1 win Wednesday. The Padres have won eight of their last 10, and the central question is whether Nick Pivetta can give their lineup enough room to pressure a deeper Los Angeles order for a second straight night.

Why Los Angeles still commands the price

The latest DraftKings moneyline lists Los Angeles at -175 and San Diego at +144. That price fits the broader season picture: the Dodgers enter at 97-61, while the Padres are 88-70. Los Angeles also has a formidable top four in its official lineup, with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández set to face Pivetta.

Our projections give the Dodgers a modest edge in opportunities at the plate, with roughly eight hits compared with about seven for San Diego. That gap doesn’t suggest a runaway by itself, but it helps explain why backing Los Angeles at home carries a substantial premium.

The confirmed pitching matchup is Tyler Glasnow against Pivetta, and the prop market puts Glasnow’s strikeout total at 7.5 while Pivetta’s sits at 4.5. Glasnow still has to navigate Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and a San Diego lineup that has been producing wins lately.

San Diego’s form creates a real counterweight

The Padres have won eight of their last 10, covering the run line six times in that stretch. Los Angeles is also playing well at 7-3, so this isn’t simply a hot team meeting a fading favorite. Both clubs carry strong recent records into a game with postseason implications.

Wednesday offered a useful reminder of San Diego’s ceiling. Machado homered and drove in three runs in the 5-1 victory, which snapped the Dodgers’ 11-game home winning streak. The AP recap also noted that San Diego moved into sole possession of the top National League wild-card spot while Los Angeles missed a chance to secure at least the league’s No. 2 seed.

There’s also a warning against leaning too heavily on one result. The Dodgers beat the Padres 7-0 one night before San Diego answered with its 5-1 win. That swing illustrates the uncertainty in a short baseball series, especially when the starting pitchers change from game to game.

Final assessment

Los Angeles has the stronger on-paper case because of Glasnow, its lineup depth and its season-long record. San Diego counters with better recent form and fresh evidence that it can win at Dodger Stadium. Pivetta’s work against the top of the Dodgers’ order matters most: limiting traffic there would give the Padres a credible path to keep the game tight, while early trouble would allow Los Angeles’ depth to take over.
