Orioles vs. Yankees Preview: A Close Price Despite a Gap in the Standings

The Yankees have the stronger record and our higher team pitching grade, but the moneyline makes this a closer call than the standings alone might suggest. Baltimore has won three straight, and its B- pitching grade doesn’t diminish what a B-rated lineup can do in one game. With Trevor Rogers and Brendan Beck starting, the question is how much New York’s broader advantage will matter against the Orioles’ current order.

Why the moneyline is close

New York is 92-67 to Baltimore’s 78-81, and our team pitching grades favor the Yankees A to B-. Both lineups earn a B, though. Pete Alonso and Gunnar Henderson give Baltimore a strong presence near the top of its order, and the Orioles won both games of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Toronto by 4-2 scores. Their three-game winning streak is a reminder that the season records don’t tell the whole story here.

The Yankees have a recent answer of their own: they came back from four runs down to beat Tampa Bay 6-4 on Thursday, with George Lombard Jr. hitting the go-ahead two-run homer. He’s in the order alongside Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice. The latest moneyline prices New York at -123 and Baltimore at +102, a relatively modest difference given the gap in their records. Our hits projections are close, too: about eight for New York and seven for Baltimore. Rogers and Beck still have to navigate those orders; the team pitching grades aren’t grades of the two starters.

What could shape the scoring

The 6.5-run total makes each club’s recent scoring worth considering. New York scored at least six runs in five of its past 10 games, and nine of those games went over their respective totals. Baltimore, meanwhile, has scored four runs in each of its three straight wins, and seven of its last 10 games went under. Those results came against different opponents and lines, but they show why Thursday’s Yankees comeback and Baltimore’s run of lower-scoring games both belong in the picture.

New York’s record and team pitching grade make a persuasive season-long case, while Baltimore’s comparable lineup grade and recent wins make the close price easier to understand. The biggest uncertainty is what Rogers and Beck bring to this particular game: that matchup will do more to test the season-long gap than either club’s last result on its own.
