Notre Dame has started 3-0, but controlling Purdue and covering a 27.5-point spread are different jobs. The Irish have a promising ground-game matchup against a Boilermakers team that has allowed plenty of points. Purdue, though, has scored 36 and 38 in its last two games. Its ability to keep doing that against a much tougher defense could decide how much separation Notre Dame creates.
Notre Dame’s route to control
The Irish have a clear way to sustain drives. Nolan James Jr. rushed for 121 yards in last week’s 27-10 win over Michigan State, and our rushing-yard projections put Notre Dame near 200 yards and Purdue around 120. If that difference shows up on the field, Notre Dame can keep its offense moving while limiting Purdue’s chances to answer.
Our grades reinforce the matchup advantage: Notre Dame has an A on offense and a B+ on defense, while Purdue grades B and B-, respectively. The Irish also held Michigan State scoreless after halftime. Still, that 17-point win fell short of the 28.5 points Notre Dame was laying. A strong defensive performance and a comfortable lead don’t necessarily add up to a cover at this week’s number.

What Purdue’s scoring changes
Purdue lost both of its last two games, 36-38 against Wake Forest and 38-52 at UCLA. Scoring that much gives the Boilermakers a credible way to stay within reach of a large spread. Allowing 90 points across those games also leaves plenty of room for Notre Dame to build a lead, especially if the Irish establish the rushing advantage our projections suggest.
Those results make the 58.5-point total interesting, too. Purdue’s offense has contributed heavily to recent high-scoring games, but Notre Dame has allowed just 23 points through three games, including a shutout of Rice. The Boilermakers don’t need to match their last two scores for the total to be in play; how often they can finish drives against this Irish defense matters alongside whatever Notre Dame produces.
The matchup in focus
Notre Dame’s rushing outlook and Purdue’s recent points allowed make a substantial Irish lead plausible. The strongest challenge to that picture is Purdue’s own scoring: a few productive drives could narrow the final margin even if Notre Dame controls much of the game. That’s why Purdue’s ability to turn possessions into points against the Irish defense matters most to both the spread and the scoring outlook.
