Pirates vs. Tigers Preview: Recent Form Meets a Pick’em Price

Pittsburgh has won seven of its last 10 games, while Detroit has won four. Yet the latest moneyline prices put both clubs at -110. The Pirates have the results; the Tigers have the stronger team grades. What makes this matchup tricky is that neither club’s recent scoring has followed a steady pattern.

Pittsburgh’s wins come with a catch

The Pirates’ 2-1 win over St. Louis gave them their seventh victory in 10 games and secured their first non-losing season since 2018. There’s substance behind their recent record, but they’ve scored two runs or fewer in each of their last three games. They’ve kept winning without giving their pitchers much room for error.

Detroit’s last 10 games offer the opposite warning about relying on the record alone. The Tigers are 4-6 in that stretch and most recently lost 4-2 to Washington. Five of those 10 games brought just one Detroit run, but three brought at least nine. Pittsburgh’s recent results are more convincing; Detroit’s bats have shown they can change a game quickly when they do break through.

Why the grades keep it close

Our grades give Detroit a B for pitching and a B- for its lineup, compared with C+ in both categories for Pittsburgh. That’s a meaningful counterweight to the Pirates’ better stretch, particularly when the market offers no price advantage to either club. It also keeps the focus on this matchup rather than treating a 10-game record as a forecast.

Jackson Jobe and Bubba Chandler are the listed starting pitchers. Detroit’s lineup includes Riley Greene, while Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz are in Pittsburgh’s. The supplied grades favor the Tigers’ units, but they don’t tell us which lineup will capitalize against these pitchers. For Pittsburgh, the path is to keep turning limited scoring into wins; for Detroit, it’s to make its stronger lineup grade count on the field.

Hits aren’t the whole scoring story

The eight-run total is interesting because both clubs have recently shown more than one way for a scoring chance to go unfinished—or turn into a big inning. Our team projections have each side around eight hits and one home run. That puts their expected hit totals close together even though Detroit’s recent run totals have swung far more dramatically than Pittsburgh’s.

Pittsburgh’s last three low-scoring games make it hard to equate its winning run with a hot lineup. Detroit’s five one-run outings make its three big games just as hard to take at face value. With similar projected hit totals, the question for both the moneyline and the total is what happens after runners reach base. Neither the recent wins nor the occasional scoring burst answers that on its own.

The Pirates bring the steadier results, while Detroit’s better grades and demonstrated scoring upside make a form-only case unconvincing. How efficiently each lineup turns its chances into runs matters more here than a small difference in projected hits.
