Raiders vs. Saints Preview: Can New Orleans’ Passing Edge Offset Las Vegas’ 2-0 Start?

A 2-0 start has given Las Vegas plenty of early credibility, but New Orleans presents a different test. The Saints have been competitive through two tense finishes, and their projected advantage through the air creates the game’s central tension: can they turn that yardage edge into enough sustained offense to offset what the Raiders have already shown?

Why New Orleans has the statistical edge

Our yardage projections give New Orleans the more productive offensive profile, especially through the air. The Saints project for about 335 total yards and 242 passing yards, compared with roughly 284 total yards and 187 passing yards for Las Vegas. The rushing outlook is much tighter, with the Raiders near 97 yards and the Saints around 93.

That passing-game difference carries more weight after the Saints showed they can sustain a drive under pressure. In last week’s 24-17 win at Baltimore, New Orleans erased a 17-9 deficit and took the lead on a final possession featuring two third-down conversions and two fourth-down conversions. Tyler Shough scored the deciding touchdown after connecting with Chris Olave for a 21-yard score earlier in the fourth quarter.

New Orleans is 1-1, but both games reached the final moments. The Saints lost 31-30 in overtime at Detroit before completing their comeback in Baltimore, so their record doesn’t fully capture how close they’ve been to a perfect start.

Las Vegas has earned respect

The quarterback matchup between Kirk Cousins and Tyler Shough gives this game another useful contrast. Shough has already navigated two late-game pressure situations, while Cousins enters after throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-14 road win over the Chargers. Cody White caught two of those scores, and Tre Tucker added a 40-yard touchdown.

There’s a counterweight in that Raiders result. The Chargers fumbled six times, and Jeremy Chinn’s late recovery and 43-yard return helped Las Vegas pull away. The Raiders converted their opportunities, but New Orleans can make this a much different game by avoiding the mistakes that created short fields and extra chances.

What the spread is asking bettors to weigh

The latest spread makes New Orleans a three-point favorite, a compact number that asks bettors to choose between projection and early results. Las Vegas has won twice by double digits, while each Saints game remained unsettled deep into the fourth quarter or overtime.

The teams’ first two results also offer a limited look at the scoring environment. Both Raiders games finished with exactly 40 combined points, while New Orleans’ games produced 61 and 41. That’s useful context around the current 43.5 total, but two games aren’t enough to establish a dependable scoring pattern.

Final assessment

New Orleans has the clearer projected yardage advantage and has shown patience in high-leverage drives. Las Vegas counters with the better record, stronger early scoring results and a quarterback coming off a three-touchdown performance. The deciding factor is whether the Saints’ projected passing edge produces long, efficient possessions; if it doesn’t, the Raiders have already shown they can punish mistakes and create separation quickly.
