Houston is still searching for its first win, yet the Texans are favored over a Dallas team that has already shown it can score. The records only make the price more intriguing: Can Houston generate enough offense to exploit the Cowboys’ defensive absences without letting Dak Prescott and Dallas turn the game into another shootout?
The records don’t explain the price
Dallas enters at 1-2 after scoring 31 points in a last-second 34-31 loss to Baltimore. Houston fell to 0-3 with a 19-17 loss at Indianapolis, managing 223 total yards while C.J. Stroud finished with 167 passing yards.
The latest market still makes Houston a three-point favorite, but our yardage projections don’t give the favorite a clear statistical edge. We project roughly 351 total yards for Dallas and 337 for Houston, including a 239-230 advantage for the Cowboys through the air.
Dallas brings the scoring volatility
There’s a sharp contrast in how these teams have been playing. Nine of Dallas’ last 10 games have gone over their closing totals, including all three this season. Houston has split its last 10 between five overs and five unders, with two of its first three games this season staying under. Against a current total of 48.5, the tension is between Dallas’ ability to create higher-scoring games and a Houston offense that hasn’t consistently sustained drives.

Availability could shape the passing matchup
The fresh injury report adds uncertainty on both sides. Houston’s Nico Collins is questionable with a hamstring injury. Dallas cornerback Cobie Durant and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown are out, while safety Malik Hooker and cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. are questionable. Those Dallas absences give Houston a potential opening in the passing game, but Collins’ availability matters to how well the Texans can take advantage of it.
What matters most
Houston’s case begins with home field and a chance to attack a depleted Dallas defense. The counterweight is substantial: the Texans are winless, just produced 223 yards against Indianapolis and trail Dallas slightly in our current yardage projections. Houston’s ability to protect Stroud, sustain drives and turn Dallas’ secondary concerns into productive possessions is the factor most likely to determine whether the favorite can control the game or gets dragged into the kind of back-and-forth contest the Cowboys have played lately.
