San Jose brings the better start into Monday night’s matchup in Dallas, but the Stars still carry the stronger underlying profile. The Sharks have opened 2-0 with nine goals, while Dallas is 0-2 and has scored only once. It’s an interesting early test of the Stars’ advantages in our team grades: their attack needs to get going, while San Jose’s productive start meets a much higher defensive grade.
A stronger Dallas profile meets a slow start
Our grades give Dallas a B+ overall compared with San Jose’s C-. The biggest separation is on defense, where the Stars earn an A- and the Sharks a D. Dallas also has the higher attacking grade, B to C. That stronger profile is consistent with the Stars’ favorite status, despite the teams’ contrasting opening results.
The immediate counterweight is Dallas’ scoring. Across their first two games, the Stars lost 4-0 to St. Louis and 2-1 at Nashville, while San Jose beat Florida 4-3 and Los Angeles 5-4. Two games are a small sample, but the contrast matters here: Dallas needs more from its attack, and San Jose has already shown it can win games that require several goals.
The Sharks’ challenge is at the other end. They’ve allowed seven goals in those two victories, so their unbeaten start hasn’t come with much breathing room. Against a Dallas team with the better attacking grade, maintaining that scoring pace alone may not be enough.
Our projections point to a modest shot gap
In our shot projections, Dallas has roughly 26 shots to San Jose’s 25. That’s a narrow difference in shooting volume, even with the larger gap in team grades. It leaves room for the Sharks to stay involved rather than requiring them to overcome an overwhelming shot deficit.
There is a little more separation in projected giveaways: about 17 for San Jose against 14 for Dallas. That makes puck management worth watching, particularly for a Sharks team that has already conceded seven goals. Where those giveaways happen will matter, but cleaner possession would help San Jose make more of its shot opportunities.

What the moneyline asks of Dallas
DraftKings’ moneyline prices have Dallas at -175 and San Jose at +145. In plain terms, a $175 Dallas wager would earn $100 in profit if the Stars win, while a $100 San Jose wager would earn $145 in profit if the Sharks win, in addition to the returned stake. Dallas’ stronger grades support its favorite status; its opening scoring struggles and the close shot projection are the reasons to examine that price carefully.
Dallas has the stronger overall profile, and San Jose’s seven goals allowed give the Stars an opening to get their attack moving. The counterweight is that the Sharks have already found ways to score and win, while our projections suggest little separation in shot volume. The key is what Dallas does with those opportunities: its higher attacking grade needs to translate into production to make the favorite’s price more convincing.
