UCF showed last week that it could build a lead against a ranked opponent. Keeping it was another matter. Now the Knights face an Oklahoma State team that piled up 609 yards in its most recent game, making this matchup about more than whether UCF can slow the Cowboys down. Can the Knights keep producing enough offense to stay competitive for four quarters?
A strong start isn’t enough
UCF led Houston 17-0 before losing 27-17 last Saturday. After building that lead, the Knights managed just 65 yards and one first down over their final five possessions. An interception helped Houston back into the game, but the prolonged offensive stall left UCF with little response.
There was useful production before that collapse. Keyone Jenkins threw for 253 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Derry caught seven passes for 101 yards. UCF’s challenge is turning those contributions into sustained offense rather than another promising stretch followed by empty possessions.
The Cowboys bring firepower—and an opening
Oklahoma State enters off a bye following its 41-24 win at West Virginia on Sept. 26. Drew Mestemaker threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns, Caleb Hawkins ran for 180 yards, and Wyatt Young finished with 192 receiving yards. The Cowboys scored on five consecutive drives after a third-quarter interception, showing the kind of sustained response UCF lacked in Houston.
That performance also came with a significant weakness: Oklahoma State allowed 334 rushing yards. One game doesn’t establish what will happen against UCF, but it gives the Knights a concrete opening to explore. Moving the ball on the ground would help them avoid relying entirely on Jenkins and the passing game.
Our grades reflect that contrast. We give Oklahoma State the edge on offense, B- to UCF’s C+, while rating the Knights more highly on defense, B to C+. The Cowboys’ recent scoring burst deserves attention, but the matchup isn’t uniformly tilted their way.

What the spread asks of Oklahoma State
DraftKings makes Oklahoma State a 10.5-point favorite. That asks more of the Cowboys than simply winning: they need enough separation to clear a double-digit spread.
Our projections put Oklahoma State at roughly 430 total yards and UCF at about 350. They also give the Knights around 145 rushing yards—a much more modest output than West Virginia managed against the Cowboys. That frames the central tension: Oklahoma State has the stronger expected yardage output, while UCF needs its ground game and a defense we rate more highly to keep the contest manageable.
The Cowboys’ strongest case is their ability to produce through both the air and the ground. UCF’s counterweight is a defense we rate more highly and an opponent that recently struggled against the run. The key is whether the Knights can sustain possessions after the opening exchanges; another long offensive drought would make this a much tougher game to keep close.
