Cleveland has won three straight games, while New York has lost three straight—and the Jets are still 2.5-point favorites for Sunday’s matchup. With Breece Hall and Adonai Mitchell ruled out, New York’s case rests on finding more consistent offense. Our rushing projections offer a reason to look beyond the records, but the Jets need to turn that ground production into sustained drives against a Browns team that keeps finding answers late.
The Jets need more than an occasional big play
New York’s 23-12 loss at Chicago last Sunday exposed a problem that goes beyond the final score. The Jets went 0-for-7 on third down and ran just 32 offensive plays. Geno Smith found Isaiah Williams for a 58-yard touchdown, but that burst couldn’t make up for an afternoon of stalled possessions. Chicago ran 89 plays, so New York also needs more stops to give its offense opportunities.
Hall is out with a quadriceps injury, and Mitchell is out with a finger injury. Those two offensive absences leave New York without important options as it tries to get its drives moving again.
Our projections offer a more encouraging picture for the Jets than their last outing: roughly 125 rushing yards, compared with about 98 for Cleveland, and about 288 total yards to the Browns’ 267. The clearest difference is on the ground; the passing-yard projections are much closer. That gives New York a plausible path to a better afternoon, though it still has to turn that production into sustained possessions.
Cleveland has momentum, but little separation
The Browns edged Pittsburgh 27-24 on October 1 on Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left. Deshaun Watson threw for 268 yards and led a go-ahead fourth-quarter drive for the third consecutive week. Cleveland also recorded five sacks and 10 quarterback hits—a strong recent performance to bring into a matchup with an offense coming off so many empty possessions.
Still, Cleveland’s three straight wins have come by three, three and four points. The Browns have been finding answers late rather than pulling away. Their 3-1 record deserves credit, but those narrow finishes show why the record alone isn’t enough to settle how to view this short spread.

What matters at a total of 39.5
The sportsbook total is 39.5. New York’s inability to extend drives last week, followed by Hall and Mitchell’s absences, makes sustained scoring a real concern. Our projections of fewer than 300 total yards for each team also point to modest yardage production, making how efficiently those drives turn into points especially important.
The counterweight is Cleveland’s recent scoring environment. Its win over Pittsburgh produced 51 combined points, and three of the Browns’ four games in the supplied 2026 regular-season sample finished over their respective totals. Three of New York’s four finished under. Those opposing four-game patterns don’t settle this total, but they show why simply carrying the Jets’ Chicago performance forward would miss part of the picture.
The useful distinction
New York’s projected rushing advantage is the strongest supported argument for looking beyond the teams’ opposite records. Cleveland counters with recent quarterback pressure and a run of close-game wins. For the Jets, the useful test is whether that ground production helps them convert third downs and keep drives alive, while their defense gets off the field more often. Improvement there would strengthen their case as favorites and create more scoring opportunities than they had in Chicago; more stalled drives would leave Cleveland’s pressure and late-game execution central to the matchup.
