Anaheim and Calgary arrive at Saturday’s matchup with very different starts, yet the odds leave plenty of room for a close game. The Ducks are 3-1 after beating Winnipeg 5-1, while the Flames are 0-4 and have allowed 23 goals. The interesting question is how much weight to give that early separation: Anaheim is just a modest road favorite, and our projections suggest a much smaller gap in shooting volume than the recent scores might imply.
Anaheim’s scoring isn’t coming from just one line
The Ducks had five different goal scorers against Winnipeg on Friday. Mikael Granlund contributed a goal and an assist, while Sam Colangelo and Nikita Nesterenko also scored. Those contributions span Anaheim’s first two forward lines: Granlund and Nesterenko skate with Cutter Gauthier on the second, while Colangelo joins Leo Carlsson and Beckett Sennecke on the first. Calgary has more than one forward group to worry about.
Our grades like Anaheim’s attack, giving it a B+ compared with Calgary’s D. But our shooting projections are closer: roughly 31 shots for the Ducks and 28 for the Flames. That points to a modest volume advantage for Anaheim, rather than the overwhelming shooting gap you might expect from those contrasting starts.
With Anaheim at -122 at DraftKings, the Ducks are modest favorites; Calgary’s +102 price leaves the Flames only slight underdogs. Anaheim’s stronger start and better attacking grade give bettors reasons to consider the Ducks, but they’re on the road the night after playing in Winnipeg. Calgary last played Thursday, giving the Flames an extra day between games.
Calgary’s problems pull the total in two directions
The Flames lost 7-3 to Colorado on Thursday. Across their first four games, they’ve scored six goals and conceded 23. They scored just once in each of their first three games before producing three against the Avalanche. At a total of 6.5, Calgary’s trouble keeping opponents off the scoreboard matters—but so does its limited contribution at the other end.
Dustin Wolf’s two recent appearances sharpen the concern about Calgary’s goaltending: he allowed six goals in each, both against Seattle, stopping 47 of 59 shots combined. That’s a rough opening sample, though two games against the same opponent offer a narrow view of how he’ll handle Anaheim. There’s also a counterweight in our grades: we rate Calgary’s team defense slightly better, at C+, than Anaheim’s C-.
There’s little recent evidence to lean on for Ville Husso, either. His available recent outing was about 16 minutes of relief against Edmonton, when he stopped both shots he faced. Two shots offer very little basis for judging how he might fare against Calgary, leaving uncertainty on Anaheim’s side of the scoring outlook too.

The useful distinction: stronger form versus a runaway matchup
Anaheim has the clearer attacking case, with scoring contributions across two lines and a stronger grade for its attack. But the relatively close shot projections, Calgary’s slightly better defensive grade and the Ducks’ back-to-back road schedule make the early results a poor reason to assume a runaway. Calgary’s most important task is limiting the damage in its own end; its four-game scoring record gives it little cushion if those concessions continue.
For the 6.5 total, that defensive problem is the strongest reason to take the scoring potential seriously, especially against an Anaheim attack that just spread five goals across five scorers. The counterweight is Calgary’s limited offense, while Wolf’s two-game sample and Husso’s brief relief outing leave neither goalie’s recent performance settled enough to resolve the tension. The useful takeaway is to weigh Calgary’s ability to reduce concessions separately from its ability to contribute goals, rather than letting the 0-4 record answer both questions.
