Boston’s last two wins have come by a combined 11-2 score, yet the Bruins are only modest favorites against San Jose. The interesting question is how much of that scoring surge travels with them. The Sharks have won three of their first five games, but contrasting recent goalie performances give this matchup more texture than the records alone suggest.
Boston’s momentum has more than one source
The Bruins beat Utah 6-1 on Thursday, then rolled past Philadelphia 5-1 on Saturday. Fraser Minten supplied a goal and two assists against the Flyers, while Pavel Zacha scored his first goal of the season. That’s encouraging production beyond simply asking David Pastrnak to carry the scoring.
There’s still some unevenness behind those two big wins: Boston scored just one goal in each of its preceding two games. Our shot projections also suggest a fairly close shooting-volume matchup—roughly 27 shots for Boston and 26 for San Jose—rather than a huge volume advantage for the visitors.
San Jose has found ways to win close games. All three of its victories have come in overtime, and it’s still seeking its first regulation win. Macklin Celebrini scored the Sharks’ lone goal in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Edmonton. Those overtime wins show San Jose has been competitive, although keeping the shot count close against Boston would still leave the Sharks needing to turn their opportunities into goals.
The goalie contrast matters to both markets
If Jeremy Swayman and Yaroslav Askarov get the starts, their recent goalie performances offer a clear contrast. Swayman has a .932 save percentage across his five most recent appearances, allowing one goal in each of his last two. Askarov has an .860 save percentage across four appearances, allowing at least three goals in each. Those are short stretches, but they strengthen Boston’s recent-performance case.
DraftKings’ moneyline odds put Boston at -120 and San Jose at +100. That’s a relatively narrow favorite’s price, not a market treating this as a mismatch. Boston has the stronger recent goaltending case, while the close shot projections and San Jose’s overtime wins provide reasons not to treat the Bruins’ latest scorelines as the whole story.

The 6.5-goal total presents a different tension. Boston’s recent scoring and Askarov’s results give the higher-scoring case substance. Swayman’s form pushes the other way, and our projections call for about three power-play opportunities per team—not a pronounced imbalance in extra-man chances.
San Jose’s games have also gone under their posted totals in three of five games this season, producing a historical profit of 0.98 units from flat one-unit under bets. The Sharks scored zero, three and one goals in their latest three games, which helps explain why their recent results haven’t consistently become high-scoring affairs. At 6.5, Boston sustaining its scoring burst is only part of the argument; San Jose’s ability to contribute against Swayman, if he starts, matters too.
What to take from the matchup
Boston’s recent case rests on more than two lopsided scorelines: Minten and Zacha contributed against Philadelphia, and Swayman has backed the scoring surge with strong recent work. Still, similar projected shot counts leave little basis for assuming another runaway. For the total, San Jose’s modest scoring in its last three games is the clearest counterweight to Boston’s hot stretch and Askarov’s struggles. The practical distinction is that confidence in Boston’s recent play doesn’t automatically translate into confidence in a high-scoring game.
