Wake Forest has earned some separation from California in the standings, but can it create the same separation on the field? The No. 21 Demon Deacons arrive at 5-1 after three straight wins, while the 3-3 Golden Bears just pulled off a late comeback. Wake is a 9.5-point favorite at DraftKings, yet our projections put these teams surprisingly close in total yardage. Cal’s ability to keep moving the ball through the air gives this matchup its most interesting tension.
Wake Forest has been winning—and covering
Wake Forest beat NC State 38-14 on Saturday, following a 57-3 win over Stanford and a 30-27 victory at Louisville. That’s a useful range of results: a close road win followed by two games in which Wake allowed a combined 17 points.
The Demon Deacons have also covered the spread in four straight games, including their loss to Miami before this winning streak began. Flat one-unit spread bets on Wake over that four-game stretch returned a historical profit of 3.64 units. That gives their recent run significance beyond the win-loss record, though those results came against different spreads than this week’s.
Our grades favor Wake on both sides of the ball: B- on offense versus Cal’s C, and C+ on defense versus Cal’s C. That supports viewing the visitors as the stronger team. The size of the spread still deserves a closer look, especially because our yardage outlook is much tighter than the teams’ records.
Cal’s passing game is the counterweight
Our team projections put Wake Forest at roughly 385 total yards and California at 377. The routes to those totals look different: about 245 passing yards and 140 rushing yards for Wake, compared with about 298 passing yards and 80 rushing yards for Cal. Wake has the more balanced production outlook; Cal’s depends much more heavily on its passing game.
That fits what the Bears did in their 25-20 comeback win over Virginia Tech. Cal threw for 321 yards and ran for 82, then put together a six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take the lead with 18 seconds left. It was a concrete example of the Bears finding enough through the air to rescue a game late.
Our projections also have Cal attempting about 42 passes, compared with 32 for Wake. That gives the Bears a clear path to staying competitive, but similar yardage doesn’t settle the spread. Cal has covered only twice in its six games this season, another reason not to equate a competitive production outlook with success against the number. The Bears need their passing production to translate into points consistently enough to keep Wake from pulling away.

What that means for the 53.5-point total
The scoring evidence pulls in different directions. Four of Cal’s six games this season finished under their posted totals, and the Bears managed 25 points last week despite their productive passing day. Wake, meanwhile, has scored 30, 57 and 38 points during its winning streak. Its six games this season are evenly split between overs and unders.
At 53.5, the key tension is Wake’s scoring upside against the resistance its defense has shown recently. Cal’s passing outlook gives the Bears a plausible way to contribute, while Wake’s last two opponents struggled to score at all. Those competing factors make Cal’s ability to sustain scoring—not simply accumulate passing yards—particularly important to the total.
Wake’s recent results and stronger grades make a convincing case for its favorite status. Cal’s counterargument is a passing game capable of keeping the overall production close. The distinction for the spread is whether the Bears can turn that volume into sustained scoring against a team that has allowed just 17 points over its last two games. Wake has demonstrated the ability to pull away; Cal’s projected passing output is the strongest reason to examine the size of the cushion rather than rely on the records alone.
