James Madison’s ground game gives App State a clear problem to solve: can the Mountaineers slow the unbeaten Dukes enough to make this competitive? James Madison arrives at 7-0 after another big rushing performance, while 4-2 App State just rediscovered its scoring touch. With DraftKings making the Dukes a 10.5-point favorite, the interesting question is how much of that Mountaineers rebound can carry over against a tougher test.
James Madison has a dependable starting point
George Pettaway ran for 119 yards on 14 carries in Saturday’s 49-22 win over Georgia State, his fourth straight 100-yard game. Camden Coleman added two touchdown passes as James Madison built a 35-10 halftime lead. The Dukes didn’t have to rely on just one route to the end zone.
The broader rushing production backs up Pettaway’s run. James Madison has topped 200 rushing yards in three straight games. Our rushing projections put the Dukes around 205 yards here, compared with roughly 135 for App State. That gives James Madison a credible way to keep moving the ball without asking Coleman to carry the entire attack.
The spread still asks for more than another win. James Madison has covered six of seven games this season, producing a historical profit of 4.43 units on flat one-unit spread bets. App State has also rewarded backers, covering four of six for a 1.70-unit profit. Both teams have exceeded their past lines more often than not; Thursday’s double-digit number is a fresh test.
App State’s rebound comes with a tougher challenge
App State rallied to beat Coastal Carolina 35-32 on Friday after scoring just three points against Old Dominion the week before. Jaquari Lewis supplied four rushing touchdowns against Coastal, while Henry Hasselbeck contributed 125 rushing yards and a touchdown pass. Those contributions helped the Mountaineers recover from a 10-point halftime deficit.
Repeating that output against James Madison is the harder part. We give the Dukes’ defense a B grade, compared with a C- for App State. Our projections also suggest a different balance for the Mountaineers this week: about 250 passing yards, against roughly 210 for James Madison, alongside the smaller rushing total. App State’s path to staying close may therefore require more through the air than last week’s rushing headlines suggest.
There’s a useful counterweight to the rushing gap, too: we project about 21 first downs for App State and 20 for James Madison. The Dukes’ ground advantage doesn’t translate into a clear lead in that measure of moving the chains, leaving room for the Mountaineers to sustain drives through a different mix of plays.

What that means for a 56.5-point total
There’s a reasonable scoring case on both sides of the matchup. James Madison’s recent ground production meets an App State defense we rate less highly, and the Mountaineers just showed they can find touchdowns on the ground and through the air. But App State’s jump from three points to 35 also makes one rebound a shaky foundation for expecting another high-scoring game against the Dukes’ stronger defense.
That makes App State’s contribution especially important to evaluating the 56.5-point total. James Madison’s rushing outlook supplies a plausible scoring foundation; whether the Mountaineers can turn their projected passing production and first downs into touchdowns is the less settled piece.
The strongest part of James Madison’s case is the continuity between its recent rushing results and our outlook for this matchup. App State’s counterweight is an offense that just recovered from a poor outing and has a credible passing-yardage outlook here. For the spread, the key is whether that passing production can keep the Mountaineers competitive rather than leaving them dependent on another huge rushing performance. For the total, it’s whether those drives finish with touchdowns against the better-rated defense.
