Giannis Antetokounmpo gave Miami 35 points in his Heat debut, and Miami still lost by 25. That makes Friday’s matchup with Detroit especially interesting: can the Heat tighten up enough elsewhere to make another big night from their new star count? The Pistons arrive after a comeback win built on contributions from several players, and they’re only 1.5-point favorites at DraftKings despite Miami’s rough start.
Detroit brings more than Cunningham
Detroit beat Boston 121-113 on Tuesday after trailing by 22 early in the third quarter. Cade Cunningham finished with 22 points and eight assists, but he had plenty of help: Jalen Duren added 22 points and nine rebounds, Duncan Robinson scored 21 while making five of nine 3-pointers, and Javonte Green supplied 19 points after not playing in the first half.
That gives Miami several problems to solve rather than one scorer to contain. Cunningham’s creation matters, but Detroit’s opener also showed a path through Duren’s scoring and Robinson’s shooting. The comeback was impressive; falling that far behind is the part Detroit won’t want to repeat.
Our grades add another reason to take the Pistons seriously in a close matchup. We rate Detroit’s defense A-minus against Miami’s C, while both teams earn a B on offense. The clearest separation in our assessment is therefore at the defensive end—not a large gap between the two attacks.
Giannis delivered; Miami’s supporting numbers didn’t
Antetokounmpo shot 13-for-19 before fouling out in Wednesday’s 131-106 loss to Minnesota. Bam Adebayo added 15 points, but the Heat were outrebounded 52-34 and outscored 63-24 from 3-point range. Anthony Edwards alone made nine threes.
Those are more useful details than the final margin by itself. Miami got efficient scoring from Antetokounmpo and still couldn’t stay close because Minnesota built such large advantages elsewhere. Against a Detroit team that just received strong shooting from Robinson and productive minutes from Duren, better perimeter results and rebounding would give Miami a more credible route to a win than simply asking Giannis to score more.
There’s reason not to carry that rebounding deficit straight into Friday, though. Our projections put Miami at about 45 rebounds and Detroit at about 44—a much closer contest on the glass than the Heat had in their opener. Rebounding remains important to Miami’s response, but another lopsided deficit isn’t the expectation in our analysis.

How that shapes the 235.5 total
The current DraftKings total is 235.5. Miami’s opening loss offers competing scoring signals: its defense allowed 131 points, but its own shooting contributed little from beyond the arc. Detroit’s stronger defensive grade could make a scoring rebound harder for the Heat, even if Miami does improve on its opener.
Our three-point projections put Miami at roughly 14 makes and Detroit at about 12. That gives the Heat a plausible scoring route beyond another huge Antetokounmpo performance, though it also asks for a clear improvement from their eight makes in the opener. At 235.5, Miami’s potential shooting recovery supports the higher-scoring case, while Detroit’s defensive assessment pushes back. Miami’s points allowed alone don’t settle the total.
For the spread, Detroit’s balanced scoring and stronger defensive evaluation make a coherent case for its narrow favorite status. Miami’s counterweight is already visible: Antetokounmpo can produce efficiently, and our projections point to more three-point support and a closer rebounding contest. The key is whether the Heat can improve around him while cutting into the perimeter advantage Minnesota exploited. That would address the reasons Miami lost so heavily, rather than relying on its star to top an already productive debut.
