Boston has a clear defensive advantage against Chicago, but a 14.5-point spread asks more of the Celtics than simply getting stops. Their attack needs to create separation, too—and that’s the less convincing part of their profile in our analysis. The Bulls’ early defensive struggles give Boston an opening, while Chicago’s ball security and outside shooting offer two useful ways to judge whether this becomes a comfortable Celtics win or a more competitive game.
Boston’s strongest case starts with stops
Our grades put Boston’s defense at A- and Chicago’s offense at C. That’s the clearest strength-versus-weakness matchup here. The complication for a big favorite is at the other end: we grade the Celtics’ offense D-, even against a Bulls defense that also earns a D-.
Boston’s latest win illustrates that tension. The Celtics held off New York 107-103 on Friday, with Jayson Tatum scoring 36 points, including 25 after halftime. That was enough to win a close game, but covering the current DraftKings spread requires a different degree of separation.
Turnovers could help Boston find it. Our projections put Chicago at roughly 16 turnovers and Boston at about 12. Giving away fewer possessions would help the Celtics keep their attack on track, although not every Chicago turnover will lead to an easy basket.
Chicago has scoring potential, but the shooting needs work
Caleb Wilson gave the Bulls a real bright spot Saturday with 30 points and 14 rebounds in their 124-120 loss to Washington. Chicago nevertheless surrendered a 10-point lead and was outscored 40-20 in the third quarter.
That game also put the Bulls’ uneven shooting in focus: Wilson went 1-for-9 from three, and Chicago finished 12-for-43. Through its first three games, the team had made just 23% of its three-point attempts. We project about 13 Chicago threes here, compared with 15 for Boston. There’s room for the Bulls to shoot better, but our outlook still gives the Celtics the advantage in made threes.
Chicago has shown it can score despite those struggles: the Bulls beat Milwaukee 132-125 on Friday, two nights after scoring just 92 in a loss to Toronto. That range makes their offense a meaningful source of uncertainty rather than an automatic mismatch for Boston’s defense.

A 232.5 total with competing pressures
Chicago has allowed at least 124 points in each of its three games to open the season. That gives Boston’s attack a more forgiving matchup than its own offensive grade might suggest, and it’s the strongest scoring argument against expecting a quiet game at the posted 232.5 total.
The counterweight is Boston’s defense against a Chicago attack still searching for its outside shot. Boston has scored 113 and 107 points in its two games this season, so its early results haven’t yet established a consistently high-scoring attack. Chicago’s 132-point night in Milwaukee shows the Bulls can contribute plenty, but their shooting swings make that output difficult to count on.
There’s also useful historical context: 57 of Boston’s 89 games over the past year finished under their posted totals, producing a profit of 19.33 units from flat one-unit bets on the under. That window crosses seasons and reflects different prices and opponents; today’s matchup presents competing pressures. Chicago’s defensive problems give Boston a chance to lift its scoring, while the Celtics’ defensive strength and uneven attack could keep the game from becoming a shootout.
What matters most
Boston’s defense provides the firmer foundation, but the size of the spread makes its offensive consistency especially important. The projected turnover advantage offers a route to separation; Chicago’s porous defense gives the Celtics another opening. The main counterweight is an uneven Boston attack facing a Bulls team that has already shown it can score in bunches. For bettors, the key distinction is between trusting Boston to disrupt Chicago and trusting the Celtics to sustain enough productive possessions to pull away.
