Philadelphia has the stronger offensive outlook heading into Indiana, but the Pacers’ backcourt is the biggest variable in this matchup. Tyrese Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard are both questionable, leaving Indiana with important availability questions against a 76ers team that has opened 3-1. With Philadelphia a 4.5-point favorite, the useful question is how much resistance—and scoring—the Pacers can provide if their guards are available.
Indiana’s uncertainty starts with its guards
Indiana’s guard injury concerns extend beyond Haliburton’s left hamstring tightness and Nembhard’s neck injury. T.J. McConnell is out with a hamstring injury, while center Ivica Zubac is also out with an ankle injury. Aaron Nesmith, meanwhile, is probable with a hamstring issue.
Haliburton’s last performance shows why his status matters. He finished with 22 points, nine assists and six rebounds in Indiana’s 110-102 loss at Milwaukee on Monday. Pascal Siakam added 20 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. That gives Indiana a concrete path to staying competitive: contributions from Siakam alongside the scoring and playmaking Haliburton supplied in that game, if Haliburton is available.
Philadelphia’s advantage goes beyond its record
Our analysis gives Philadelphia’s offense an A+ against a D-rated Indiana defense—a clear matchup advantage for the Sixers. Our rebound and turnover projections also favor Philadelphia: roughly 43 rebounds to Indiana’s 35, and about 10 turnovers compared with 14. That outlook gives the Sixers ways to limit empty possessions and collect more rebounds rather than relying on hot shooting alone.
There’s still a distinction between liking that matchup and judging the spread. Philadelphia is 3-1 outright but has covered in two of its four games this season. The Sixers also lost 106-93 to Detroit on Sunday, although that game came on the second night of a back-to-back without Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe. That result deserves its personnel context rather than becoming the whole case against Philadelphia.

Why 237.5 needs a closer look
The total presents a different tension. Philadelphia’s strong offensive grade and Indiana’s weak defensive grade support the possibility of a productive Sixers scoring night. Philadelphia’s own defense grades C+, which leaves room for Indiana to contribute if its guards are available.
But the early results haven’t delivered consistent high scoring. Three of Philadelphia’s first four games stayed under their respective totals. Indiana scored 136 in Sunday’s win at Brooklyn, then 102 at Milwaukee on Monday; its four games have split evenly between overs and unders. Against a total of 237.5, that variability matters. Philadelphia’s offensive advantage is only part of the scoring outlook—the Pacers’ ability to sustain their end is the more uncertain piece.
The key before tipoff
Philadelphia has the stronger supported case through its offense, rebounding outlook and projected turnover advantage. Indiana’s counterweight is the production Haliburton and Siakam have already shown together. Having Haliburton available would give the Pacers that scoring and playmaking option, but it wouldn’t erase Philadelphia’s other advantages. The key is whether Indiana’s available guards can provide enough consistent offense to make the spread and scoring outlook more competitive; their status updates deserve a fresh look alongside the lines before tipoff.
