Brandon Miller just gave Charlotte a glimpse of how far his scoring can take it. Now comes a tougher test: a Detroit team whose defense we rate highly, but which returns home after a rough night in New York. Miller’s hot hand gives the Hornets a starting point; getting enough help around him against the Pistons is the bigger challenge.
Charlotte has momentum—and a demanding matchup
Miller scored a career-high 39 points as Charlotte beat Washington 110-103 on Monday. Naz Reid added 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Moussa Diabate grabbed 17 boards. That was Charlotte’s second straight win after scoring just 81 points in a loss to Atlanta.
Both teams enter at 3-1, but Charlotte’s winning record doesn’t settle the offensive question. Our grades give the Hornets’ offense a D-minus against an A-minus Detroit defense. Miller’s latest performance offers a clear path to competing, but sustaining that production against the Pistons is a different assignment.
Our assist and turnover projections sharpen the supporting-production question: about 28 assists for Detroit compared with 19 for Charlotte, alongside roughly 14 Pistons turnovers and 16 for the Hornets. We expect more assisted baskets and fewer giveaways from Detroit. For Charlotte, getting enough help around Miller matters as much as another big scoring performance from him.
Detroit’s advantage comes with a quick turnaround
The Pistons’ latest game is the counterweight to that favorable matchup. Detroit lost 111-97 to the Knicks on Tuesday, getting outscored 37-13 in the third quarter. Cade Cunningham finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, but Detroit couldn’t recover from that stretch.
Now the Pistons play on consecutive nights, while Charlotte had Tuesday off. That schedule difference makes Detroit’s ability to sustain its execution worth watching. Our B offensive grade and stronger defensive assessment support the Pistons’ favorite status, but Detroit’s 6.5-point spread asks for more than simply being the better-rated team. The short turnaround and Tuesday’s uneven performance complicate that assignment.

The total already asks for a quieter game
The sportsbook total is 215.5. Charlotte’s first four games have all finished Under, but each carried a higher total, ranging from 220.5 to 227.5. That lower line leaves less room for another Under, so the Hornets’ early betting results aren’t enough on their own to assess this number.
Detroit’s defensive grade and Charlotte’s inconsistent scoring give a lower-scoring game a plausible foundation. The counterweight is Detroit’s own attack: the Pistons scored 121 and 128 points in their first two games before dropping to 106 and 97. Charlotte also gets a B defensive grade from our analysis. At 215.5, a Detroit scoring rebound would put pressure on the lower-scoring case, while the Hornets’ defense and the Pistons’ quick turnaround could make that rebound harder to deliver.
What matters most
Detroit has the stronger overall matchup profile, especially when Charlotte has the ball. Miller’s form and the Hornets’ extra recovery day keep that advantage from being the whole story. Charlotte’s supporting production is the key pressure point: Reid and Diabate contributed in Monday’s win, but our projections still point to an assist and turnover disadvantage here. More help around Miller and fewer empty possessions would give the Hornets a more credible route to staying competitive; another night built heavily around his scoring leaves Detroit’s defense with a clearer task.
