Calgary has won four straight behind a run of strong performances from Devin Cooley, but every one of those wins came at home. Now the Flames head to Edmonton, where Connor McDavid has recorded a point in each of the Oilers’ first 12 games. Edmonton is the -192 moneyline favorite, putting Calgary’s recent turnaround up against both a change of venue and a very different scoring challenge.
Calgary’s turnaround starts with keeping games manageable
The Flames beat Carolina 3-2, Minnesota 2-1, Detroit 4-1 and Toronto 5-2 during their winning streak. Historical flat one-unit moneyline bets on Calgary returned 5.89 units across those four games. The sequence has lifted the Flames to 5-6-0, giving their current form a much stronger look than the overall record alone.
Cooley started all four wins and allowed no more than two goals in any of them. He made 26 saves against Toronto on Monday, when Matvei Gridin scored twice and Mikael Backlund added a goal in Monday’s win. Joel Farabee and Martin Pospisil supplied the final two goals into an empty net, so the 5-2 finish shouldn’t obscure how much of the game Calgary spent protecting a narrower advantage.
Cooley’s five most recent appearances for Calgary this season give him a 92.0% save percentage, including an earlier game in which he allowed seven goals against Colorado. He’s the expected goalie again, though he isn’t confirmed. If he plays, sustaining the form from those latest four starts is Calgary’s clearest route to keeping the +160 underdog price interesting.
McDavid gives Edmonton a scoring case beyond its last two results
The Oilers are 8-2-2 despite consecutive losses, a 7-2 defeat to Toronto followed by Monday’s 4-3 shootout loss to Detroit. McDavid added an assist against the Red Wings to extend his season-opening point streak to 12 games and reach 34 points in Monday’s shootout loss.
Edmonton led three times Monday before allowing the tying goal with 1:17 left in regulation. Vasily Podkolzin, Isaac Howard and Colton Dach scored, while Tristan Jarry made 26 saves. That gives the Oilers a more useful picture to work from than simply calling it a second straight loss: they generated leads, but couldn’t protect the last one.
Calgary’s challenge is that its recent defensive success now meets an opponent with seven wins across its last 10 games and McDavid producing throughout the season so far. Edmonton’s challenge is to turn that scoring threat into a complete result against a goalie who has been giving the Flames room to win close games. The favorite has the stronger overall record; the visitor has the sharper recent turnaround.

The 6.5 total brings two different runs together
Edmonton’s last five games have gone Over their respective totals, and eight of its 12 games this season have done so. Calgary’s first three wins in its current streak all finished Under, before the Toronto game ended with seven goals, including those two empty-netters.
At 6.5, the key tension is Edmonton’s sustained scoring threat against Cooley’s recent ability to limit opponents. The Oilers have also conceded at least three in each of their last four games, leaving Calgary a potential scoring route of its own. But Monday’s five-goal Flames total included two goals after Toronto pulled its goalie, and Calgary’s winning streak has often depended on much tighter scores. That’s a reason to weigh the quality of its recent goaltending alongside Edmonton’s Over run.
What travels with the Flames?
Calgary has earned a serious look through four consecutive wins and consistent recent starts from Cooley. Edmonton counters with the stronger season record and McDavid’s remarkable scoring start, while its late lead against Detroit showed a more competitive performance than the prior loss. The most useful test is whether Calgary can reproduce its recent low-concession games away from home. If it can, this becomes a much tougher favorite’s task than the teams’ overall records suggest.
