UAB has played six straight games that finished Under their totals, but Saturday’s visit to South Florida comes with a different scoring bar. The total is 42.5, lower than any the Blazers have faced this season. That makes their recent results a starting point for the discussion, rather than a shortcut to the same bet again.
The number changes the story
Six of UAB’s seven games this season have gone Under, with those seven totals ranging from 49.5 to 55.5. Its most recent game was a 30-17 overtime win over East Carolina on October 15. That final score included an overtime touchdown pass from Ryder Burton and an interception return for a touchdown by Delvon Gulley.
UAB needed a late comeback just to get there. Burton led a 93-yard drive, threw the tying touchdown with 35 seconds left and ran in the two-point conversion. He finished with 256 passing yards, while CJ Smith caught eight passes for 119 yards. It was a strong finish, but overtime and the defensive score were important parts of the 30-point result.
South Florida brings a different set of scoring results. Four of its seven games have gone Under, and its latest outing was a 29-2 win over Kent State on October 17. Before that, the Bulls lost 31-24 at UTSA and 17-13 to Temple. There is support for a restrained scoring outlook, but the recent games have not all followed one pattern.
South Florida’s advantage comes in both phases of the attack
DraftKings makes the Bulls a 7.5-point home favorite. They enter at 5-2, compared with UAB’s 4-3, and our projections give South Florida an advantage in both passing and rushing yardage: about 234 to 198 through the air and 164 to 141 on the ground.
That is a broader offensive case for the favorite than relying on its last lopsided score. The first-down outlook is closer, at roughly 21 for South Florida and 20 for UAB, so there is still room for the Blazers to sustain drives. Burton’s late response against East Carolina supplies a concrete example of UAB moving the ball when it had to, even after a difficult start.
The teams’ results against the spread also call for some care. South Florida has covered three of seven games this season. UAB has three covers, three losses against the spread and one push. The Bulls’ better win-loss record and projected yardage advantage make a case for favorite status; they do not make covering this particular spread automatic.

What matters at 42.5
Our offensive grades are C for South Florida and C- for UAB, while the defensive grades are C+ and C, respectively. Those evaluations fit a matchup without an overwhelmingly strong attack. The yardage outlook, though, gives both teams ways to move the ball, and UAB’s last finish showed how a late drive and a defensive touchdown can change a scoring picture.
The useful distinction is between a history of Unders and the demands of today’s lower total. UAB earned that six-game streak against higher thresholds, while South Florida’s recent results range from a comfortable win with very little conceded to a game featuring 55 combined points. At this number, how productive drives finish matters more than assuming the streak will do the work.
South Florida has the more balanced projected yardage advantage, with the closer first-down outlook and UAB’s late-game resilience providing the counterweight. The Bulls need to make their extra production count to create separation. For the total, that drive-by-drive execution deserves a fresh assessment at 42.5 rather than a bet borrowed from UAB’s higher historical thresholds.
