Atlanta’s problem entering Thursday’s game against Cleveland is easy to identify and harder to fix: the Hawks have allowed at least 120 points in three straight losses. The Cavaliers arrive with three straight wins and an attack that has topped 120 in each. Yet Atlanta is a narrow home favorite, making this a useful test of whether the Hawks can interrupt that scoring pattern rather than simply trade baskets.
Atlanta needs more resistance after Wednesday
Miami beat Atlanta 129-117 on Wednesday, shooting 53% and scoring 70 points in the paint. The Hawks had already allowed Houston 121 and 120 points in their previous two games. Those are different opponents and matchups, but the repeated scoring totals make Atlanta’s defensive response the central issue.
The Hawks did find production of their own. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and rookie Kingston Flemings each scored 23 against Miami. Jalen Johnson added 11 assists and nine rebounds, though he shot 4-for-12 and finished with 12 points. That gives Atlanta two routes to a better result: more scoring from Johnson or fewer easy points allowed at the other end. The latter would reduce how much offense the Hawks need just to stay level.
Our grades reflect the attacking challenge: we give Cleveland’s offense an A-, compared with a C for Atlanta’s defense. That assessment adds context to the matchup, while Wednesday’s results show why it matters in practical terms. Atlanta needs to make Cleveland work for its scoring instead of falling into another game in which a productive night of its own still isn’t enough.
Cleveland is winning, with some uncomfortable stretches
The Cavaliers beat Washington 121-111 on Wednesday after trailing by 13 early in the third quarter. Evan Mobley scored 24, including a career-high five 3-pointers, and Peyton Watson added 22. Cleveland later used a nine-point burst to turn a one-point deficit into control of the game.
That comeback followed wins of 127-125 over Minnesota and 125-121 over Brooklyn. The Cavaliers have found enough offense to finish those games, but the close margins and Wednesday’s deficit are meaningful counterweights to their 3-1 record. They’ve covered the spread once in four games this season, including the latest win.
DraftKings makes Atlanta a 1.5-point favorite. At that small a spread, Cleveland’s recent ability to close games matters, as does its habit of leaving itself work to do. Atlanta’s opportunity is to combine its own scoring with a better defensive stretch, while Cleveland’s is to keep testing a defense that hasn’t held up over the Hawks’ last three games.

The total turns on more than Cleveland’s winning streak
The total is 237.5 points. Four of Atlanta’s five games this season have gone over their respective totals. Its latest three losses show how points can accumulate even when the offense isn’t enough to win. Cleveland’s recent scoring and Atlanta’s struggles protecting the paint make sustained defensive improvement the important hurdle to a quieter game.
There are reasons to resist treating another high total as automatic. Cleveland’s 121-111 win over Washington stayed under its 240.5-point line, and Atlanta held Charlotte to 81 in an earlier win. Mobley’s career-best night from three was also a standout performance, not a routine level of production to assume again. Both teams played Wednesday; that short turnaround is part of the setting, without settling whether shooting or defense will suffer more.
Cleveland brings the more consistent recent scoring, but its wins haven’t all been comfortable. Atlanta’s clearest route to changing the matchup is better resistance on defense, because it has already shown that scoring well can coexist with losing. For assessing both the narrow spread and the total, watch for evidence that the Hawks can break that pattern.
