Colts–Jaguars: Jacksonville’s Defensive Edge Faces a Big Spread

Jacksonville is a ten-point favorite against Indianapolis, but the clearest difference in our matchup assessment is on defense. Both offenses receive B+ grades; the Jaguars’ defense earns a B+ against the Colts’ C-. That makes this more interesting than a comparison of their records: can Jacksonville turn its stronger defensive outlook into sustained separation from a Colts team that stayed close to unbeaten Minnesota last week?

Indianapolis had the lead, then ran out of answers

Jonathan Taylor‘s 38-yard touchdown run on the opening drive gave the Colts a lead they held for more than three quarters in Sunday’s 16-10 loss at Minnesota. Indianapolis had chances to add to it, but Spencer Shrader missed two second-half field goals. One miss from 56 yards gave the Vikings the starting position for their only touchdown drive.

The pressure on Daniel Jones was a bigger concern than the six-point final margin alone suggests. Minnesota sacked him four times for 44 lost yards, and Harrison Smith intercepted him late to end the Colts’ final opportunity. Taylor supplied an early scoring play, but Indianapolis couldn’t sustain enough offense to protect the lead.

Lawrence brings a productive passing game back from the bye

Jacksonville’s last game before its bye was a 34-31 loss to Houston at Wembley on October 18. Trevor Lawrence completed 24 of 41 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Bhayshul Tuten. That is a much more encouraging offensive starting point than the result alone.

The Jaguars also gave Houston extra opportunities. A penalty for too many men on the field extended a Texans possession that ended in a touchdown. After Jacksonville rallied to tie the game at 31, Houston drove for the winning field goal. Lawrence’s production gave the Jaguars a route back into the contest, but they couldn’t get the final stop.

Our team projections favor Jacksonville through the air, at roughly 221 passing yards against 193 for Indianapolis. That supports a stronger passing outlook for the home side, though it is more modest than Lawrence’s latest performance. The Jaguars’ defensive advantage remains the more pronounced distinction in our assessment.

The margin and total ask different things of Jacksonville

The Jaguars have covered in 11 of 17 games over the past year, returning a historical profit of 4.06 units from flat one-unit spread bets. This season, though, their four wins have produced three covers in six games. Their latest two results—a 19-17 win over Philadelphia and the three-point loss to Houston—show why winning football and building a large margin deserve separate attention.

DraftKings’ total is 46.5. Lawrence’s four-touchdown outing and Indianapolis’ weaker defensive grade give the scoring case substance. But four of Jacksonville’s six games this season went Under, and its stronger defensive assessment presents another challenge for an Indianapolis offense coming off 10 points and repeated disruption in the passing game.

For the total, the Colts’ ability to sustain drives is a central issue. Taylor’s early touchdown showed they could create a big play; the rest of the Minnesota game showed how hard points became when pressure and missed chances accumulated. Jacksonville has the more encouraging recent passing performance, but repeating four touchdown passes is a substantial demand.

The Jaguars have the stronger case for controlling this matchup through their defense and a steadier passing outlook. Indianapolis’ counterweight is that it kept Minnesota within reach despite its offensive problems. For bettors assessing the large spread, the important question is whether Jacksonville can keep the Colts from extending possessions while avoiding the penalties and late defensive lapse that undermined its last game.
