Chargers–Rams: A Balanced Rams Attack Tests the Chargers’ Response

The Rams just paired three Matthew Stafford touchdown passes with 192 rushing yards in Las Vegas. The Chargers enter their Los Angeles matchup trying to recover from a six-point performance before their bye. With the Rams favored by 6.5, the key test is whether the winless Chargers can sustain enough offense to keep the Rams from building the kind of early lead they enjoyed last Sunday.

The Rams found more than one way to finish drives

Stafford threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns in the Rams’ 35-21 win over the Raiders. Kyren Williams and Blake Corum combined for 192 rushing yards and two scores, while Puka Nacua caught eight passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Davis Allen caught the other two scoring passes.

That balance helped the Rams reach halftime up 28-6. They also limited the Raiders’ Ashton Jeanty and Mike Washington Jr. to 42 combined rushing yards on 14 carries. Winning those ground-game exchanges gave the Rams a substantial cushion before Las Vegas made its late push.

The qualification is how uneven the Rams have been. They lost 18-16 to Arizona in the previous game. Sunday’s performance gives their favorite role a strong recent foundation, but it doesn’t settle the question of repeating it.

The Chargers need longer possessions and better finishes

The Chargers’ last game was a 22-6 loss at Kansas City on October 18. Justin Herbert threw for 204 yards and an interception, and the offense finished with 259 total yards and two turnovers. A second-half drive inside the Chiefs’ 15 ended in a field goal after a stopped run and two incompletions.

That was another difficult scoring day in an 0-6 start. The Chargers have topped 20 points once this season, and they haven't covered a spread, with five losses and one push. Against a Rams defense we grade A-, getting useful drives from Herbert is the first requirement for making this a competitive game.

There is some encouraging practice news in the receiving group. Ladd McConkey was a full participant Wednesday after leaving the Kansas City game with a concussion. Tre’ Harris, who missed that game, practiced on a limited basis with a hamstring issue. Those updates offer a clearer picture of Herbert’s receiving options, with Sunday availability still worth following.

On defense, Derwin James Jr. reportedly suffered a setback with his hamstring and is likely to miss Sunday's game against the Rams. That is a matchup-specific availability concern, rather than a confirmed final game designation.

The 45.5 total depends on the Chargers’ response

Our grades favor the Rams’ offense, A against the Chargers’ B+. The team passing projections show a larger output gap, about 264 yards for the Rams against 181 for the Chargers. The rushing outlook is much closer: roughly 130 yards for the Chargers and 125 for the Rams. That gives the underdog a plausible route to a more balanced game, even after its latest offensive struggles.

DraftKings’ total is 45.5. Five of the Chargers’ six games have gone Under, while four of the Rams’ seven have gone Over. The Rams’ latest mix of rushing production and touchdown passes supports the scoring case, but the Chargers’ limited production and the Rams’ strong defensive assessment are substantial restraints.

The Chargers also receive a B+ defensive grade, so the Rams’ five-touchdown outing shouldn’t be treated as an automatic repeat. For this total, the most useful issue is whether the Chargers can turn their projected ground contribution and improving receiving practice picture into sustained drives and touchdowns. Another day of stalled possessions would leave the scoring burden much more heavily with the Rams.

The Rams have the stronger recent performance and the clearer passing outlook. The Chargers’ counterweight is an assessment that still gives both units B+ grades, plus a rushing projection that compares favorably. For the spread, though, that potential needs to become actual drive production: avoiding another early deficit matters more than a late attempt to narrow it.
