Trail Blazers at Jazz: Morant’s absence reshapes Portland’s spread test

Portland’s first loss of the season came with a more consequential setback: Ja Morant suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to miss four weeks. The Trail Blazers now visit Utah as 6.5-point favorites, facing a Jazz team that just pushed San Antonio to overtime but may again be without Lauri Markkanen. The spread turns on how much Portland can sustain without Morant—and how much scoring help Utah has available.

Portland’s strong start faces a new test

The Blazers opened 3-0 before Memphis beat them 124-103 on Thursday. Deni Avdija supplied 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, but Damian Lillard shot 3-for-13 from the field. Morant had 14 points and three assists in 23 minutes before leaving in the fourth quarter. Portland announced Friday that he has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain.

Avdija’s contribution gives Portland something concrete to carry forward. Lillard’s shooting response matters too, after a difficult night that followed his game-sealing 3-pointer against the Lakers. The Blazers scored 136 in that win and 128 in their previous victory at Sacramento. Those results show what the attack has done, but Saturday comes with a different personnel picture.

The player points markets put Avdija’s threshold at 23.5 and Lillard’s at 22.5. Avdija scored just above his present line against Memphis, while Lillard’s poor shooting makes his next performance harder to read from that one game. One game offers context for those thresholds rather than a prop recommendation. For the team spread, the practical question is whether Portland gets enough production across its remaining options to build separation.

Utah’s latest loss offered some resistance

The Jazz are 1-4 and have covered only once in five games this season. That cover came in Wednesday’s 117-111 overtime loss to San Antonio. Utah led by as many as 11 and got a season-high 31 points from Keyonte George, plus 19 from Ace Bailey and 18 from Darryn Peterson.

Utah’s trouble came late. The Spurs forced four turnovers in overtime and held the Jazz to 2-for-7 shooting in the extra period. That gives the underdog case some texture: Utah competed through regulation, but its offense faltered when San Antonio applied pressure. A single cover doesn’t erase the earlier misses, though it does show more resistance than the Jazz’s win total suggests.

Markkanen missed that game with a wrist injury and is questionable for Saturday. His points market is set at 22.5, which makes his availability particularly relevant to the scoring options around George. That market remains conditional on him playing.

Our defensive grades favor Portland, C+ against Utah’s D-. That supplies a case for the road favorite beyond the records, but Portland itself is only 2-2 against the spread. Winning three of four and covering two of four are different starts, especially now that Morant is out.

The total depends on the available scoring

The total is 231.5. Portland’s four games have split evenly between Over and Under, while three of Utah’s five have gone Under. Utah’s last game stayed Under despite overtime, with the late shooting and turnover problems limiting its finish. Portland’s 103-point outing against Memphis also offers a much different scoring picture from its earlier wins.

There’s a plausible higher-scoring case in Utah’s defensive grade and Portland’s earlier offensive output. Our made-three projections also call for about 15 for the Blazers against 12 for the Jazz, giving Portland a potential source of separation from outside. Morant’s absence and Markkanen’s uncertain availability are the main reasons to be careful about carrying earlier scoring performances straight into this matchup. The personnel questions matter more than Utah’s longer history of 48 Overs in 83 games over the past year.

Portland has the better defensive assessment and stronger early results, but the favorite must now show it can create a margin without Morant. Utah’s clearest route to staying close is to build on George’s latest scoring performance, get clarity on Markkanen and avoid another late offensive breakdown. Check availability alongside the price before judging how much weight to give either team’s early results.
