Kings–Grizzlies: Memphis’ perfect start faces a bigger margin test

Memphis has won and covered the spread in all five games, including an 11-point win over Sacramento. The rematch asks a little more of that perfect start: can the Grizzlies keep creating separation with Ty Jerome questionable, and can the Kings turn productive individual performances into a cleaner team game? Sacramento is winless, but its latest loss showed that scoring alone isn’t the problem.

A perfect start meets a larger assignment

The Grizzlies beat Sacramento 123-112 on Sunday, then won at Utah and Portland to reach 5-0. DraftKings now has Memphis favored by 10.5 points. That makes the distinction between winning and building a large margin central to the discussion.

Memphis has done both at times, winning by 20 on opening night and by 21 in its latest game. But it also has three- and five-point victories in this run. Its five straight covers came against different expectations, including games as an underdog; they don’t all represent performances against a double-digit favorite’s assignment.

Thursday’s 124-103 win at Portland offered an encouraging example of scoring depth. Cameron Boozer had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists, and seven other Grizzlies scored in double figures. Memphis outscored Portland 33-20 in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies had several contributors available to help finish the game.

Jerome scored 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting in that win. He is questionable for Saturday with a back issue, as is fellow guard Scotty Pippen Jr. Jerome’s availability matters to the matchup even after a night when other players carried more of the scoring. The Portland performance is evidence of recent depth, not a reason to dismiss that uncertainty.

Sacramento needs fewer wasted possessions

The Kings fell to 0-5 with a 132-120 loss at New Orleans on Thursday. Darius Acuff Jr. supplied 34 points and 12 assists, while Domantas Sabonis had 15 rebounds and seven assists. Sacramento also committed 25 turnovers, including seven by Sabonis, and lost the bench-scoring comparison 41-8.

That combination explains why a productive scoring night didn’t translate into a particularly close finish. Acuff’s performance gave Sacramento an offensive lift, but wasted possessions and the difference in reserve scoring left too much to overcome. The Kings have covered only once in five games and have allowed at least 121 points in each.

Our turnover projection puts Sacramento at about 13 here, a much less costly night than the one in New Orleans. That is an important expectation to test rather than an improvement to take for granted. A cleaner game would let the Kings make more use of their offense; repeating the 25-turnover performance would make their task much harder.

We give both offenses a B grade, another reason to consider Sacramento’s scoring potential despite the opposite records. Our projections also show different three-point output: about 15 makes for Memphis and 11 for Sacramento. The Grizzlies’ expected production from beyond the arc is another part of the challenge for a Kings team already struggling to limit opponents.

Opposite paths to a 233.5 total

Four of Sacramento’s five games have gone Over, while four of Memphis’ five have stayed Under. Their first meeting was the exception on the Memphis side, with the 123-112 result going Over a 234.5 total. That gives this scoring discussion a direct matchup reference, though not a template the rematch has to follow.

Memphis has held opponents between 103 and 112 points during its opening five wins. Sacramento, meanwhile, has scored 120 twice and still lost both games. At a 233.5 total, the tension is between the Grizzlies’ recent ability to keep opponents’ scoring down and Sacramento’s repeated inability to contain opponents. Jerome’s status and Sacramento’s turnover execution are meaningful uncertainties on top of those contrasting results.

Memphis has earned the stronger case through balanced contributions, a previous win in this matchup and five straight covers. The harder question is whether it can sustain a large margin against a cleaner Sacramento offense. For the Kings, reducing wasted possessions offers a more concrete route to competitiveness than simply asking Acuff to repeat his biggest scoring night. That is the most useful test of whether this rematch differs from their first meeting.
