Can Georgia State’s ground game create separation against Coastal Carolina?

Georgia State has a promising way to get back on track against Coastal Carolina: lean on a rushing attack that looks well suited to this matchup. But creating separation is another matter. The Panthers have lost two straight, and the Chanticleers showed enough passing punch in their last game to make the favorite uncomfortable. Georgia State needs its advantage on the ground to come with a steadier defensive performance.

Why the ground game matters

Georgia State returns home at 4-3, while Coastal Carolina comes out of its bye at 2-5. Yahoo Sports highlights the Panthers’ rushing matchup against a Coastal defense allowing roughly 190 rushing yards per game. Our rushing projections fit that picture: we expect Georgia State to run for about 190 yards, compared with about 150 for Coastal.

Qwantavius Wiggins supplied the clearest example of Georgia State’s big-play potential last Saturday. He broke a 77-yard touchdown run and finished with 99 yards on eight carries in a 38-32 loss to Arkansas State. That burst matters, but so does the rest of the result: the Panthers allowed touchdowns on three consecutive second-half drives. A productive running game alone won’t solve the problems that have surfaced during their two-game skid.

Coastal has a way to answer

The Chanticleers lost 35-32 to Appalachian State on October 16, but Deuce Bailey threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, including a 71-yard score to Robby Washington. Coastal led 24-14 at halftime before falling behind. That gives the visitors a credible route to staying close: another productive passing day against a Georgia State team that just allowed 309 passing yards at Arkansas State.

There’s a reason not to assume Coastal will repeat that output, though. We project about 225 passing yards for the Chanticleers, who scored 17 or fewer points in two of their last five games. Georgia State has covered the spread in five of seven games this season, producing a historical profit of 2.51 units on flat one-unit bets, but its two most recent games were both losses against the spread. The latest DraftKings line makes the Panthers 3.5-point favorites; their earlier betting success needs to be weighed against that recent defensive trouble.

What matters at a total of 55.5

Both teams scored 32 points in their most recent game, and neither defense protected them well enough to win. Georgia State’s rushing matchup and Coastal’s demonstrated ability to strike through the air give the posted total of 55.5 a plausible route to a higher-scoring afternoon. The counterweight is Coastal’s uneven scoring: its latest passing performance was substantially stronger than our expectation for this matchup. How consistently the Chanticleers can contribute points matters more here than simply carrying forward the last two final scores.

Georgia State’s rushing matchup gives it a concrete way to build an advantage, but pulling away requires more than another explosive run. The Panthers need to interrupt the scoring drives that hurt them at Arkansas State; otherwise, Coastal’s passing game offers a way to answer even without matching its last performance. For bettors weighing the spread, that’s the distinction that matters: Georgia State’s ability to move the ball is better supported than its ability to keep Coastal from responding.
