Detroit already has one answer to Charlotte’s offense: the Pistons held the Hornets to 89 points in a win last Wednesday. The rematch now moves to Charlotte, where the Hornets are trying to stop a three-game skid. Their perimeter scoring offers a route back, but Detroit’s ability to disrupt possessions has been a major part of its strong start.
A rematch with a different margin to clear
The Pistons are 3.5-point favorites in the DraftKings lines. They won the first meeting 97–89, just covering that game’s 7.5-point spread. That result gives Monday’s matchup a useful reference point, though Charlotte now gets the home floor.
Detroit is 5–1 outright and against the spread. Its only loss came at New York, and it followed that defeat with wins over Charlotte and Brooklyn. The Hornets are 3–4, with the same record against the spread, and have lost their last three both outright and against the number.
The recent head-to-head result supports Detroit’s case, but the way it won matters. Holding Charlotte below 90 was enough to overcome a modest scoring night of its own. A more productive Hornets offense would ask a different question of the Pistons.
Detroit’s pressure can change more than the shot
The Pistons beat Brooklyn 110–94 on Friday after falling behind early. Their decisive third quarter included nine forced turnovers and a 37–17 scoring advantage. Detroit also finished with a 27–11 advantage in fast-break points.
That gives Charlotte something specific to solve beyond making shots. Keeping possession would help the Hornets get their scorers involved while limiting Detroit’s chances to score before the defense is set. If the Pistons can create another burst of turnovers, they have a way to build a lead without relying entirely on their half-court offense.
Our analysis grades Detroit’s defense A–. Its early results give that evaluation useful context: through Friday, no opponent had shot better than 45.5% from the field against the Pistons. That makes Charlotte’s ability to protect the ball and find productive attempts central to this rematch.

Charlotte has shooters, but needs a stronger finish
The Hornets got plenty from two scorers in Saturday’s 109–104 loss to Philadelphia. Grayson Allen scored 27 points off the bench while making seven of 10 three-point attempts, and Brandon Miller added 24 points with five made threes.
Charlotte led 97–90 with five minutes left before Philadelphia took over the finish. That’s a meaningful counterweight to the recent losing streak: the Hornets were in position to win late. But Allen’s shooting was exceptional, and even that contribution didn’t carry them home. They’ll need to sustain their offense against a Detroit team that just limited them in the first meeting.
Charlotte’s injury reports rule out Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams for Monday, both with hamstring injuries, following Sunday’s updates.
Pressure and perimeter scoring shape the total
The total is 211.5. Detroit’s last four games have stayed Under, and six of Charlotte’s seven games this season have done the same. Their first meeting produced 186 combined points, making it the clearest recent example of Detroit keeping this particular opponent’s scoring down.
Still, defensive pressure can create points at the other end, as Detroit’s fast-break production against Brooklyn showed. Charlotte’s shooting also offers a route to a different scoring night. The useful distinction is whether the Pistons force empty possessions that become transition chances, or the Hornets keep the ball long enough to get their perimeter scorers involved.
Detroit’s case rests on more than the first meeting: its pressure against Brooklyn showed how stops can also fuel its scoring. Charlotte has demonstrated enough perimeter production to challenge that case, but Saturday’s lost lead shows that a hot shooter alone isn’t enough. Protecting possessions is the Hornets’ clearest route to making that shooting matter for a full game—and to changing the low-scoring pattern of the first meeting.
