Kentucky vs. Tennessee Preview: Can the Wildcats Slow DeSean Bishop?

DeSean Bishop ran for 130 yards against South Carolina, and Tennessee still lost after coming up short on a late fourth-and-one. Kentucky held Vanderbilt to 15 rushing yards but needed a quarter to get its own offense going. On Saturday, watch whether the Wildcats can force Tennessee into those tough short-yardage snaps before the Vols have a lead to protect.

What happens when Tennessee needs a yard?

Bishop helped Tennessee rally from 14–0 down to lead South Carolina 24–17. Then the Gamecocks stopped George MacIntyre on fourth-and-one, tied the game and forced a late fumble to set up the winning field goal, according to the Associated Press recap. If Bishop keeps Tennessee ahead of the chains, the Vols can keep the playbook open on third down. If Kentucky can get off the field on those short-yardage snaps, it gives its offense more chances to answer.

DraftKings had Tennessee favored by 6.5 at 5:46 p.m. ET Wednesday. Kentucky has covered six straight at the lines for those games, but it had only 14 yards in the first quarter against Vanderbilt and fell behind 10–0. Kenny Minchey threw for 203 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as Kentucky recovered to win 34–17, per the AP recap. If Kentucky avoids another slow start, Minchey’s ability to run or throw gives it more ways to keep the margin to six or fewer at Neyland.

Both previous games reached 51, but only one went over

DraftKings priced both sides of 50.5 at −110 in the same snapshot. Tennessee’s 27–24 loss went over its 50.5 line. Kentucky’s 34–17 win stayed below its 51.5 line, even though it would clear Saturday’s number. Six of Tennessee’s eight games have gone under their own totals, including its 26–10 win over Alabama.

Watch whether Tennessee’s run game produces touchdowns or simply keeps the clock moving. If Kentucky gets stops on short yardage and neither team gives up a short field, both offenses may need longer drives to get to 51 points. If Minchey gets Kentucky scoring early, Tennessee has less room to lean on the run and protect a lead.
