Iowa vs. Northwestern Preview: Can the Wildcats Turn Drives Into Touchdowns?

Aidan Chiles threw for 281 yards and ran for 93 against Oregon, yet Northwestern came away with four field goals and just two touchdowns. Now the Wildcats face an Iowa defense coming off its third shutout of the season. What Northwestern gets out of its best drives could matter more than how far Chiles takes them.

Northwestern has more than one way downfield

Chiles accounted for a touchdown through the air and another on the ground as Northwestern took a 20–13 lead into halftime at Oregon. The Wildcats added only six points after the break in a 34–26 loss, while the Ducks went ahead on a fourth-and-goal touchdown and later scored on a 75-yard pass.

Our yardage projections give Northwestern about 210 through the air and 130 on the ground, compared with roughly 180 and 100 for Iowa. That gives the Wildcats a plausible path to more scoring chances, but with DraftKings making Northwestern a three-point favorite, the Wildcats could move the ball more easily and still leave Iowa close if they keep settling for kicks.

Iowa can answer a stop with a long drive

In the 30–0 win over Wisconsin, Iowa stopped a fourth-down run from its own 1-yard line. The Hawkeyes also put together a 98-yard touchdown drive, and Hank Brown completed 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and two scores. A stop near the goal line followed by an offense capable of driving the length of the field makes it harder for Northwestern to get by on field goals.

The 45.5 total brings the same matchup into focus. Six of Iowa’s eight games this season went under their own totals, while six of Northwestern’s eight went over. Brown’s efficiency against Wisconsin and Chiles’s ability to create yards both ways give this game routes to points. Scoring could slow if Iowa makes Northwestern grind through long drives that end in kicks or empty trips. Wisconsin managed 52 rushing yards against Iowa, while Chiles alone ran for more than that against Oregon. How Iowa handles the quarterback run is one of the clearest differences between those two games and this one.

Watch what Northwestern gets from its first deep trip. If Iowa forces a kick, the Wildcats can win the yardage battle and still leave the Hawkeyes within one good drive. If Chiles’s running threat helps turn those trips into touchdowns, it gives Northwestern a way to build separation and puts more pressure on Iowa to answer through the air.
