Florida ran for just 48 yards against Georgia and turned the ball over four times. Getting more out of early downs would take some pressure off the passing game Saturday. The challenge is doing it against an Oklahoma defense we grade higher than Florida’s.
Florida needs easier downs and longer drives
Jadan Baugh gained 38 yards on 17 carries in the 27–8 loss to Georgia. A strip sack became a 66-yard Georgia touchdown just before halftime, and Florida later lost a chance to score when a pass from the Georgia 3 was intercepted in the end zone. Those two plays show how quickly a game can get away from Florida when it struggles to run and its passing possessions end in turnovers.
Our rushing projections put Florida at about 140 yards and Oklahoma closer to 95. If Florida gets that kind of production, it can keep drives going without asking its quarterback to bail it out on third-and-long. That matters with DraftKings making Florida a 6.5-point favorite. If those drives end in touchdowns, the Gators can build separation. If Oklahoma forces third-and-long and gets off the field, Florida may have to ask more of a passing game that had a rough afternoon against Georgia.

Oklahoma’s passing game can keep the margin tight
Oklahoma had just 118 yards through three quarters in a 42–25 loss to South Carolina, but John Mateer found Ivan Carreon for two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Our projections put the Sooners ahead through the air, roughly 230 passing yards to Florida’s 205. If Oklahoma can find some of those completions while the game is still close, it has a way to answer even if its running game has trouble getting started.
DraftKings’ 44.5 total leaves room for a few big plays to change the scoring. South Carolina hit touchdown passes of 84 and 79 yards against Oklahoma, and the Sooners scored on an interception return. Florida’s game against Georgia stayed at 35 combined points even with a defensive touchdown. The end-zone interception was a reminder that a takeaway can erase points, too. If Florida leans on long drives and Oklahoma’s early possessions stall again, the scoring can stay down. Big passes or a takeaway that sets up a short field can change that without either offense moving the ball consistently.
Start with Florida’s early-down runs. If they leave the Gators with short third downs, the home favorite has a clearer route to extending drives and protecting a lead. If Oklahoma keeps those runs in check and finds completions before it has to chase the game, Florida’s path to winning by a touchdown gets tougher.
