Giants vs. Eagles preview: McCarthy’s next test comes with backfield questions

J.J. McCarthy gave the Giants an encouraging first start of the season, but the decisive plays in their overtime win at Houston came on the ground. Now New York returns from its bye with Cam Skattebo missing Wednesday’s practice and an Eagles opponent searching for offense of its own. How much of the Giants’ successful formula carries into Philadelphia if their backfield isn’t at full strength?

Houston gave New York more than a quarterback story

McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards in the Giants’ 27–21 win on October 25. Skattebo ran for 124 yards on 17 carries, scored a fourth-quarter touchdown and broke a 42-yard run in overtime before Devin Singletary’s winning touchdown, the AP reported. New York needed its running game as well as a productive quarterback change.

The Giants also forced Houston into a three-and-out on the opening possession of overtime. They had enough passing production to move the ball, rushing gains that changed the game and a defense that created the final opportunity. That is a useful blueprint, though one start from McCarthy leaves plenty still to learn about how repeatable it is.

Skattebo’s hamstring kept him out of Wednesday’s practice, according to the Giants’ practice report. That is an early-week participation update, not a confirmed absence for Sunday. His status is one of the consequential Wednesday practice absences in this matchup. Singletary’s winning run shows another back’s recent impact without settling how New York would divide carries if Skattebo cannot play.

Philadelphia needs possessions that last

The Eagles led Washington 10–0 before losing 27–10 on Sunday night. Tanner McKee was sacked five times and threw an interception, while Saquon Barkley managed 30 rushing yards on 13 carries. Philadelphia finished with 268 yards, including 69 on its final drive after the game had slipped away, according to the AP. The Eagles failed to score after the first quarter.

Joe Milton III is listed as Philadelphia’s starting quarterback for this matchup. McKee’s difficulties describe the previous game; they don’t tell us how Milton will perform. The broader challenge remains sustaining drives so that a brief early lead doesn’t have to survive another long offensive drought.

Barkley and DeVonta Smith also missed Wednesday’s practice with hamstring-related concerns, with Barkley’s report citing his back as well. Those participation reports leave Sunday’s availability and workloads open. They matter to an offense that has scored 21 or fewer points in each of its last six games, all losses: Philadelphia needs more production while key contributors are dealing with physical issues.

The spread and total ask different questions

The saved DraftKings spread favors the Giants by 3.5. New York is 4–2–1 and has covered five of its seven games this season. Philadelphia is 2–6 and has failed to cover in its last three. But the Giants’ latest win came as a 10-point underdog. Turning that performance into a road win while laying points asks more than keeping a game close.

Our rushing projections put New York near 126 yards and Philadelphia near 105. Those are team expectations, rather than forecasts for any one back’s workload. The Giants’ success in Houston gives the ground game a concrete place in this assessment; Skattebo’s practice absence makes it harder to assume the same contributions from the same players.

The listed total is 38.5. The Giants’ last four games all went over their totals, with New York scoring at least 27 in each. Only the latest was McCarthy’s start, and it needed overtime. Philadelphia supplies the counterweight, with three unders in its last four and six straight games without exceeding 21 points. Those recent under thresholds were 39.5–41.5, so Sunday’s lower number also deserves attention.

The useful scoring question is whether Philadelphia can sustain enough offense to contribute, while New York preserves the balance it showed in Houston. A working Giants ground game would give McCarthy help; an Eagles offense that stalls again would make it harder for Philadelphia to stay within reach. Watch the quality of those drives as well as the practice picture. Both will tell us more about the spread and total than extending either team’s streak on its own.
