Houston had the first possession of overtime against the Giants and couldn’t earn a first down. The Chargers kept the Rams without a first down for five drives and still couldn’t turn that opening into a win. Those missed opportunities make this matchup more complicated than the Chargers’ winless record suggests. Both offenses need to sustain drives, and Houston has to do it as a road favorite after its bye.
Stroud’s late rescue didn’t fix the whole game
C.J. Stroud threw two touchdown passes against New York on October 25, including the tying score to Xavier Hutchinson with less than a minute left in regulation. He also finished with a season-low 153 passing yards in a 27–21 overtime defeat, according to the AP. Houston punted on its first three possessions after halftime before finding that late touchdown, then went three-and-out to open overtime.
The Giants then won on Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown run, set up by a 42-yard Cam Skattebo run. Those plays leave Houston with a second repair alongside its offensive consistency. It needs to prevent an opponent’s ground game from turning one missed opportunity into a decisive drive.
The Texans are 2–5, but they won their two games immediately before facing New York, scoring 26 against Tennessee and 34 against Jacksonville. They have shown more offense than the latest passing line suggests. The bye gave them time to work on that inconsistency; now they need to turn the preparation into drives that last.
Herbert’s yardage hasn’t protected the Chargers
Justin Herbert threw for 257 yards against the Rams, yet Los Angeles lost 24–9. Two interceptions helped the Rams score, including an opening field goal after a long interception return and a touchdown shortly after the second takeaway. Herbert has thrown an interception in every game this season, according to the AP report carried by ESPN. Moving the ball means less when those possessions also give the opponent scoring opportunities.
The Chargers did enough early defensively to hold a 9–3 lead late in the first half. They couldn’t extend it before the Rams found three touchdown drives. Los Angeles finished with 295 total yards but failed to turn its early advantage and passing production into touchdowns.
Our team rushing projections put the Chargers near 131 yards and Houston near 90, without assigning an individual workload. The Chargers struggled to run against the Rams, while Houston’s latest defeat ended with consecutive explosive runs. More dependable rushing production would give Herbert another way to keep drives alive, although Los Angeles still needs to protect the ball.

Houston still has to earn its favorite’s price
The DraftKings spread favors Houston by 4.5 points. The Chargers are 0–7 outright and have six spread losses and a push. Houston has covered twice in seven games. The case for the Texans begins with Los Angeles’ repeated offensive failures, but Houston’s own recent stall is the counterweight. A struggling opponent doesn’t remove the need to sustain drives and create separation.
The total is 40.5. The Chargers’ seven-game sample this season contains six Unders, including the last three, against those games’ respective totals. They have scored nine, six and 17 points in those three games. That pattern has concrete support in the interceptions and missed scoring opportunities, rather than just a sequence of betting results.
Houston’s season offers a different picture, with four Overs in seven games. Its latest Over needed overtime: the Giants game was tied 21–21 after regulation against a total of 43.5. The preceding Jacksonville win finished 34–31. There is evidence that a Texans game can become a scoring exchange, but it requires more than assuming Herbert’s passing yards or Stroud’s late touchdown will translate into steady points.
Houston’s clearest route to separation is to make Los Angeles answer sustained drives rather than let the Chargers hang around through another offensive stall. For Los Angeles, a steadier ground game and fewer giveaways would make its passing yards more useful. The same improvements that could keep the spread competitive would also challenge the recent low-scoring pattern; the winless record alone doesn’t settle either market.
