San Jose State scored its only touchdown last week on an interception return. Northern Illinois found a 61-yard touchdown pass to stay within reach at UNLV, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Those two losses frame Saturday’s matchup: the Spartans need their offense to finish drives, while the Huskies need to stop giving away quick scores that put their offense under pressure to answer.
A sizable favorite still has work to do
DraftKings makes San Jose State a 10-point favorite at home. The Spartans are 4–5 and Northern Illinois is 0–8, but the recent scores supply a useful caution about expecting easy separation. San Jose State has scored 13 and 16 points in consecutive losses, while the Huskies’ latest defeat was 31–24 at UNLV.
In AP’s recap of San Jose State’s 21–16 loss to New Mexico, the Spartans’ offense produced only three field goals. Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa’s 89-yard interception return brought them within five in the fourth quarter, but their final four possessions ended twice on downs and twice on interceptions.
Luke Weaver threw for 190 yards and two interceptions, and San Jose State managed just 48 rushing yards. The defense put points on the board, but the offense couldn’t capitalize on the chances that followed. That is a concern for a favorite being asked to create separation.
Northern Illinois offers a different defensive test. The Huskies have allowed at least 28 points in all eight games this season. In the AP account of the UNLV loss, they surrendered a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage and a 60-yard touchdown run early in the second half. San Jose State would welcome that kind of shortcut after struggling to sustain offense against New Mexico.
The ground game is a useful measure of improvement
Our rushing projection puts San Jose State at about 171 yards, up sharply from its 48 against New Mexico. Reaching that expectation would give the Spartans a more useful running game to lean on. Consistent gains could leave them with more manageable passing downs; they still have to turn those gains into points.
Northern Illinois showed at UNLV that it can answer with big plays of its own. Taron Dickens threw touchdown passes of 12 and 61 yards, and Telly Johnson Jr. added a 20-yard scoring run. The Huskies also held a first-half lead before UNLV moved ahead. A winless record doesn’t erase the ways they created points in that game.
San Jose State has to take advantage of Northern Illinois’ defensive struggles without letting a long Huskies play undo that progress. Northern Illinois has scored 23, 21 and 24 points in its last three games. Those totals haven’t brought a win, but they make the Spartans’ own offensive finishing relevant to the margin.

A 52.5 total meets eight straight San Jose State Unders
San Jose State’s last eight games have all gone Under their game totals. Its last two produced 41 and 37 combined points, well short of Saturday’s 52.5 threshold. The latest game also included a defensive touchdown, so the score alone overstates how much the Spartans’ offense contributed.
The route to more scoring comes from the matchup’s other side. Northern Illinois has repeatedly allowed opponents to reach the end zone, and its own explosive touchdown at UNLV shows how quickly a possession can change the scoring picture. That game produced 55 points, even though it stayed just Under its historical total of 55.5.
Offensive touchdowns from San Jose State would change both discussions. They would help the favorite build a lead and supply points beyond the defensive score it needed last week. Another afternoon of stalled drives would make separation harder and give the recent low totals more relevance, even against a defense that has conceded plenty.
The distinction is between facing a struggling opponent and taking advantage of it. Northern Illinois has been vulnerable all season, but San Jose State’s offense still needs to do the finishing. Field goals kept the Spartans close last week; touchdowns are what would give them room against a Huskies team that has recently found ways to score.
