Nebraska and Illinois carry identical 5–3 records into Friday night, but their recent finishes tell very different stories. The Cornhuskers have lost three straight games after holding fourth-quarter leads. The Illini have won three straight and just used the final possession to leave Maryland with a victory. Nebraska’s stronger team grades make it an understandable favorite, yet the matchup’s most useful question is whether it can turn good stretches into a complete game against an opponent that has recently found ways to finish.
Nebraska’s defense has kept the door open
The Cornhuskers’ three losses came by a combined 13 points: 20–17 against Indiana, 17–14 at Oregon and 17–10 against Washington. Those scores show how little room Nebraska has had for mistakes. They also show an offense that hasn’t scored more than 17 points during the skid.
According to AP’s report on ESPN, Nebraska forced punts on eight of Washington’s first nine possessions. The decisive change came late: Washington converted a fourth-and-18 before Chris Lawson’s go-ahead touchdown, then Alex McLaughlin returned Anthony Colandrea’s third interception for another score. AP also reported that Nebraska had led in the fourth quarter of each of its three consecutive losses.
Washington’s final score included a defensive touchdown, so the result can’t be explained simply as Nebraska allowing two late offensive touchdown drives. Ball security and the ability to sustain Nebraska’s own offense were central parts of the problem. The defense had given the Cornhuskers repeated chances to put the game away.
Illinois supplied the finish Nebraska needs
Illinois’ 20–17 win at Maryland wasn’t comfortable either. Javari Barnett’s 64-yard touchdown run gave the Illini their first lead on the opening play of the fourth quarter. After Maryland tied it, Illinois took possession with 5:45 remaining and drove to a game-winning field goal on the final play, according to AP’s report via ESPN.
That final drive offers a concrete contrast with Nebraska’s recent endings. Illinois moved the ball, exhausted the remaining time and left Maryland no possession to answer. Against a defense that has repeatedly kept Nebraska close, sustaining a drive could matter as much as producing a big play.
DraftKings has Nebraska as a 4.5-point road favorite. Our team grades favor the Cornhuskers on both sides of the ball: A- on offense and A on defense, compared with Illinois’ B offense and B+ defense. The counterweight is Nebraska’s recent scoring, which has fallen well short of what its offensive grade might lead a reader to expect.
Nebraska has covered six of eight spreads this season, including two games during the current losing streak when it was an underdog. Illinois is 3–4–1 against the spread, with last week’s three-point win producing a push. Nebraska has stayed competitive during the skid, but covering as an underdog asks something different from winning by enough as tonight’s favorite.

The total depends on how possessions end
The total is 50.5 points. Nebraska’s last three games all stayed under their respective totals, with combined scores of 37, 31 and 27. Illinois’ last two also stayed under, although five of its eight games this season have gone over. Illinois’ full-season results give a less consistent low-scoring picture than its latest two outings.
Our statistical projections put Nebraska around 377 total yards and Illinois around 365, including roughly 171 rushing yards for the Cornhuskers and 154 for the Illini. That suggests meaningful offensive production is possible for both teams. The scoring question is how often those drives become touchdowns, stall or end with a turnover.
Illinois showed two ways to find points last week: Barnett’s long run and a patient final drive. Nebraska’s loss showed how a turnover can add points without the opposing offense taking the field. For the spread and total alike, the key is whether Nebraska can complement its defensive work with cleaner offensive possessions—and whether Illinois can keep the ball long enough to finish on its own terms.
