Sharks vs. Stars preview: San Jose’s scoring slump leaves little room for penalties

San Jose’s scoring slump leaves little room for mistakes, and Friday’s loss in Minnesota showed how quickly penalties can use up that room. The Sharks allowed two power-play goals in a 4–1 defeat and now visit Dallas for their second game in as many nights. The Stars are strong favorites, but their own one-goal outing Thursday makes this more interesting than a straightforward comparison of records.

San Jose needs more than a competitive opening

Macklin Celebrini tied Friday’s game in the second period by deflecting a point shot after winning a faceoff and moving to the net. Minnesota went back ahead on a power-play redirection and pulled away in the third. The Wild’s earlier goal had come with a two-man advantage, as AP’s recap details.

The Sharks have lost four straight, scoring only five goals across those games. In that context, discipline matters because conceding extra opportunities can force an already struggling attack to chase a larger deficit. Celebrini provided a way back into Friday’s game, but San Jose couldn’t build enough scoring around that moment.

Dallas presents another demanding defensive matchup. Sharpest Bets grades the Stars’ team defense an A-, compared with San Jose’s D+. That is a meaningful contrast in the broader assessment, though the expected goalie matchup adds an important complication.

A different Dallas goalie changes the picture

Mikko Rantanen scored after a Columbus turnover Thursday, but Dallas couldn’t hold its late lead and lost 2–1 in a shootout. Casey DeSmith made 29 saves. The Stars’ only goal came in the third period, with Wyatt Johnston assisting, according to AP’s report.

That tight game followed a 6–5 Dallas win at Washington. The Stars have won seven of their last ten, but those two very different recent scoring environments are a reason to look beyond a single final score.

Jake Oettinger is the projected starter Saturday. His five most recent starts produced an .861 save percentage, a reason to hesitate before expecting Dallas’ strong defensive grade to translate into another quiet night for San Jose.

Alex Nedeljkovic is San Jose’s projected goalie. He allowed 17 goals across his five most recent appearances, all starts. Both assignments await confirmation; Askarov and DeSmith handled the teams’ immediately preceding games.

What the price and under history leave open

Saturday morning’s DraftKings snapshot has Dallas at -305 and San Jose at +245, with a total of 6.5. San Jose’s four losses and Dallas’ stronger recent record explain part of the gap, but being the more plausible winner does not automatically make a steep moneyline attractive.

Twelve of Dallas’ 16 games have finished under this season, as have ten of San Jose’s 18. The Sharks’ recent scoring drought fits that history. Those results came against previous totals and goalie assignments, though, so they offer context for 6.5 rather than an automatic case for the under.

The scoring question is whether San Jose can create more without giving Dallas extra chances through penalties, and whether the Stars turn a favorable matchup into sustained production. Sharpest Bets rates the side at two stars and the total at one. San Jose’s lack of scoring makes Dallas the understandable favorite, but Oettinger’s recent results leave room to question how comfortable that favorite should be.
