Both Philadelphia and Calgary carried a lead into the third period of their latest game, and neither came away with a win. For two teams whose offenses grade D- in our analysis, those missed opportunities matter: finding a lead is hard enough without having to rebuild one late. Sunday’s meeting is a chance to change that pattern, but the recent scoring results suggest neither side can count on a comfortable cushion.
Leads that didn’t survive
The Flyers led the Rangers 2-1 before losing 3-2 in New York. AP reported that Pavel Dorofeyev tied it on a power play and Tye Kartye scored the winner with 4:39 left. Philadelphia’s two goals came from Simon Benoit and Noel Acciari.
Calgary led Anaheim 3-2 heading into the third, then lost 5-3 at home. AP reported that a Matt Coronato delay-of-game penalty preceded the Ducks’ power-play equalizer, with Cutter Gauthier breaking the tie late. The defeat ended the Flames’ five-game home winning streak.
The shared lesson is practical: a third-period penalty can leave a narrow lead exposed. Neither team needs to turn this into a wide-open contest to improve on its last result. Protecting the advantage it earns would be a meaningful start.
Philadelphia’s defense needs more help
The Flyers have scored twice in each of their last two games, both losses. Their six-goal win over Utah immediately before those defeats shows they can produce a bigger night, but it hasn’t become a sustained scoring run. In their last ten games, Philadelphia has reached four goals only twice.
Our grades put the Flyers’ defense at B, compared with Calgary’s C+, while both attacks sit at D-. That leaves Philadelphia’s defensive assessment as a distinction between otherwise limited offensive profiles. But that advantage still needs scoring support: Philadelphia allowed three at New York and lost.
Calgary’s recent offense has been uneven too. The Flames scored six against Seattle, then two at Colorado, two at San Jose, one at Seattle and three against Anaheim. They won two of those five games. Their latest defeat is a reminder that even a better scoring night needs a solid finish.

The goalies and a lower total
The projected goalie matchup is Dan Vladar against Dustin Wolf, with neither starter confirmed. Vladar’s last five appearances for the Flyers produced a .893 save percentage; Wolf’s last five for the Flames produced .907. Wolf’s sample covers four starts and one relief appearance.
Vladar allowed three goals in each of his latest two appearances, while Wolf allowed four against Anaheim after allowing two and one in his preceding two games. Joseph Woll played Philadelphia’s latest game at New York. The goalie selections remain an important update rather than something to assume from the previous result.
DraftKings’ moneyline prices of Philadelphia -112 and Calgary -108 leave little separation between the teams, much like their offensive grades. Calgary has six wins in its last ten games, compared with four for Philadelphia. That recent-form advantage gives the Flames a case, while the Flyers’ stronger defensive grade offers a counterweight.
The 5.5 total is worth weighing separately from that close moneyline. Philadelphia has gone under in 11 of 18 games this season, and Calgary has six unders in its last ten, with no pushes in either sample. Past totals matter here: Calgary’s last three games were all priced at 6.5, and their combined scores were three, three and eight. Today’s lower number asks a different scoring question from those recent markets.
The useful thing to watch is how each team handles the next narrow advantage: can it keep creating chances without handing the opponent a way back?
