Brooklyn has scored 114 and 121 points in its last two games, yet it arrives in Dallas with only two wins in nine. The offensive improvement is useful; turning it into something reliable is the next step. Sunday’s matchup leaves room for that response because the Mavericks’ stronger offensive grade comes with a defensive weakness of their own.
Brooklyn needs its offense to last
The Nets lost 124-121 at Atlanta after leading by 17 early. AP reported that the Hawks won the fourth quarter 36-26. Michael Porter Jr. scored 25 points, while Nolan Traore and Julius Randle added 19 each.
Before those two stronger scoring nights, Brooklyn finished with 98 points against Indiana and 90 against New York. The contrast matters: the Nets can compete in a low-scoring game, as their win over Indiana showed, but they haven’t established a dependable level of offense.
Mikel Brown Jr. is out for rest after scoring 18 against Atlanta. AP also reported after Saturday’s game that coach Jordi Fernandez expected Egor Demin to miss at least one more game with a right-leg bone bruise. Brooklyn therefore has to build on its better scoring without Brown and with Demin expected to remain out.
Brooklyn also travels from Atlanta to Dallas for the second night of a back-to-back, adding to the challenge of sustaining that offense.
Dallas has the stronger attack, with a defensive caveat
The Mavericks beat Utah 112-100 on Friday. AP reported that P.J. Washington scored 22 of his 26 points before halftime, while Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving supplied 21 points during a decisive 22-10 third-quarter run. Washington carried the early scoring before Flagg and Irving helped create separation.
That result ended two straight losses, 115-100 against Sacramento and 112-111 at San Antonio. The Mavericks are 5-4, with one of their wins coming by 24 against Oklahoma City and another by 12 against Utah. Their recent results show they can create separation, but it hasn’t been an every-night outcome.
Our team grades put Dallas’ offense at B- against Brooklyn’s C-. The defensive comparison goes the other way: Brooklyn grades C+ and Dallas D+. Both teams grade C overall. The Mavericks’ offensive distinction is useful context for their favorite’s role; the defensive grade is a reason to take Brooklyn’s ability to answer seriously.

Past covers don’t settle a large spread
DraftKings lists Dallas as a 9.5-point favorite, with a total of 219.5. Both teams are 6-3 against the spread this season, and Brooklyn has covered four straight. The Nets’ 2-7 outright record therefore tells a different story from their performance against past betting numbers.
That distinction is especially useful here. Brooklyn covered in recent losses at New York and Atlanta, alongside wins over Indiana and Charlotte. It can stay within a number without solving its problems well enough to win. Dallas, in turn, needs to keep its good stretches from giving way to a Brooklyn response. Its weaker defensive grade makes that a meaningful part of the spread question.
The total deserves its own reading. Seven of Dallas’ nine games have gone under, including its latest three, while five of Brooklyn’s nine have gone over; neither season sample has a push. Dallas’ last three combined scores were 215, 223 and 212 against higher posted totals than today’s. The 223-point game at San Antonio illustrates the difference: it finished under its own total but above today’s number. Dallas’ under record is useful context, while the lower line and Brooklyn’s recent scoring keep it from settling this total on its own.
The key is how often Brooklyn can answer after Dallas finds a good stretch, especially with Brown unavailable and Demin’s absence expected to continue.
