Alabama heads to Tennessee looking to rebound, with a tricky question to answer: can it keep the Vols’ running game from making this a tight afternoon? Both teams are 5-1, but the Crimson Tide are coming off their first loss while Tennessee just pulled out a late win at Arkansas. Alabama is an 8.5-point favorite at DraftKings, yet our yardage projections suggest the Vols have a credible path to making the Tide work for that margin.
Tennessee has a way to make Alabama work
DeSean Bishop supplied the biggest piece of Tennessee’s 24-17 win at Arkansas on Saturday. He ran for 138 yards, including a 59-yard burst that helped set up his winning touchdown. George MacIntyre threw for 247 yards in his first career start, although two interceptions complicated the afternoon.
That rushing performance matters against an Alabama team that just allowed Georgia 206 yards on the ground in a 20-17 home loss. One game doesn’t establish a recurring weakness, but it gives Tennessee a concrete example of how an opponent kept Alabama under pressure.
Our yardage projections give the Vols about 150 rushing yards to Alabama’s 95, along with roughly 365 total yards to 330. We also project about 23 first downs for Tennessee and 18 for Alabama. That’s a meaningful counterweight to the spread: Tennessee has a plausible route to sustaining drives rather than needing to trade quick scores with the Tide.
Alabama’s passing game needs a response
Alabama’s offense looked very different against Georgia than it had earlier this season. The Tide scored at least 45 points in each of their first five games before managing 17 on Saturday. Keelon Russell completed 16 of 30 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown against the Bulldogs.
Our projections put Alabama at about 235 passing yards against Tennessee, compared with roughly 210 for the Vols. That gives the Tide a potential advantage through the air, even with Tennessee ahead in projected rushing and overall yardage. For a favorite of this size, the distinction matters: Alabama needs its passing production to translate into scoring opportunities, particularly if the ground game remains modest.
Tennessee offers a real obstacle. Across their last three games, the Vols have allowed 20, 14 and 17 points. Alabama’s early scoring surge is the strongest reason to expect a response, but Tennessee’s recent results make it harder to assume the Tide will simply return to those big totals.
Alabama has also covered the spread in four of its six games this season. Tennessee’s yardage outlook poses a challenge to the favorite, but the Tide have already delivered against several different spreads; their loss to Georgia isn’t the whole story.

A 51.5 total meets two very different scoring histories
Five of Alabama’s six games this season have gone over their sportsbook totals. Five of Tennessee’s six have gone under. At a posted total of 51.5, those opposing histories are more useful as a warning against a simple trend-based bet than as a clear answer.
There’s a supported case for scoring restraint: Tennessee’s recent points allowed, Alabama’s limited rushing projection and the Tide’s difficulties against Georgia. Tennessee has also scored 17, 24 and 24 points in its last three games, so its ability to sustain drives hasn’t recently produced big scoring totals.
The counterweight is Alabama’s five-game run of big scoring outputs before that loss, plus Tennessee’s ability to create a major gain on the ground. The total turns on whether Alabama can regain its scoring efficiency against a team that has recently kept games contained—and whether Tennessee can turn its rushing opportunities into touchdowns rather than merely accumulate yards.
What matters most
Tennessee’s rushing and first-down outlook gives the Vols a credible way to keep this competitive, but Alabama’s projected passing advantage and early scoring record explain why that path won’t be easy. The most telling response will come from the Tide’s passing game: if it creates productive scoring drives, Tennessee’s recent offensive output leaves the Vols with more to do than simply move the ball. That’s the tension worth watching for both the spread and the total.
