The Angels have the more favorable starting-pitching setup on paper, but that doesn’t make their moneyline price automatic. The Athletics just erased a six-run deficit against Los Angeles, and our projections give their lineup a small edge in several categories. The central question is whether Walbert Urena can create enough separation before the bullpens take over.
Urena gives Los Angeles its clearest advantage
Urena and Jeffrey Springs are the confirmed starting pitchers, and their season numbers help explain why Los Angeles is favored in the latest DraftKings market. The AP’s recap of Tuesday’s game listed Urena at 9-10 with a 2.74 ERA and Springs at 4-14 with a 6.18 ERA entering this matchup.
That’s the strongest part of the Angels’ case. Los Angeles also carries a C defensive grade from our data, compared with a C- for the Athletics. If Urena works efficiently and the defense supports him, the favorite has a plausible route to controlling the early innings.
The complication is that the overall team grades are even at C-. The Athletics have a C- grade at the plate while the Angels sit at D+, and our projections for the two lineups lean slightly toward the home side: about nine hits for each club, but roughly 16 total bases and 1.5 home runs for the Athletics compared with about 14 total bases and 1.2 homers for Los Angeles. Those aren’t huge gaps, but they matter when the favorite’s price rests so heavily on the starting-pitcher comparison.
Tuesday showed how quickly this matchup can turn
The Athletics won the previous meeting 9-7 after trailing 6-0. Carlos Cortes and Zack Gelof hit two-run homers in the eighth inning, while Los Angeles finished with 15 hits and the Athletics had 14. Denzer Guzman also homered for the Angels, extending his run to four straight games with a home run at Sutter Health Park.
Neither club brings especially strong form across its last 10 games. The Angels are 4-6 over that stretch, while the Athletics are 3-7. Those games have also produced plenty of scoring: seven of the Angels’ 10 cleared the listed total, as did six of the Athletics’ 10, with one push for each team.

Why the price is still debatable
The starting-pitching gap supports Los Angeles, but the similar overall grades and the Athletics’ modest projected advantage in power and total bases keep the matchup from looking one-sided. Urena is the main reason to prefer the Angels’ setup; the question is how much weight that edge should carry once the game reaches the bullpens.
Tuesday’s 16-run game and the recent scoring samples give the total some context, though one wild result isn’t enough on its own. The stronger case for another active scoring environment comes from the power and total-base projections, with Urena’s ability to limit damage providing the clearest counterweight.
Final assessment
This matchup turns on whether Urena can put Los Angeles in control early enough to neutralize the Athletics’ advantages elsewhere. His reported season ERA and the Angels’ defensive grade provide the strongest support for the favorite, while Oakland’s projected edge at the plate is the main reason for caution. The most important factor is how much of the game the Angels can keep in Urena’s hands before the matchup becomes a bullpen contest.
