Arizona State vs. Texas Tech: Can the unbeaten Raiders create enough separation?

Texas Tech has won every game, but winning comfortably enough for bettors has been a different challenge. The No. 10 Red Raiders are 15.5-point favorites against Arizona State after a win built heavily on takeaways. The useful question is whether Texas Tech can create that separation through sustained offense—or whether the Sun Devils can keep their running game involved long enough to make this competitive.

Texas Tech’s last win deserves a closer look

The Red Raiders beat Colorado 29-7 on October 3, but the final score skips over some important details. Texas Tech trailed 7-3 at halftime, was outgained 375-315 and turned four interceptions into 19 points, including John Curry’s interception return for a touchdown. Those takeaways were valuable plays; they also mean the winning margin wasn’t simply a reflection of an offense moving the ball at will.

That distinction matters with a spread this large. Texas Tech is 5-0 but has covered twice in its five games this season. The longer view is more favorable: backing the Red Raiders against the spread over the past year produced eight wins in 13 games and a profit of 2.25 units on flat one-unit bets. Their unbeaten record and their betting results tell different stories, especially when the line asks for a comfortable win.

Arizona State needs more than one big rushing night

Arizona State found a productive route in last Saturday’s 30-12 win over Hawaii. Cardae Mack ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, including a 67-yard score, while Cutter Boley threw two touchdown passes to Reed Harris. As the AP reported in its game recap, offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo took back play-calling duties for that game.

Our rushing projection for Arizona State suggests a tougher assignment this week: about 134 yards for the entire team. We also project roughly 17 first downs for the Sun Devils against 20 for Texas Tech. That makes Arizona State’s ability to extend possessions an important part of its case for staying close, rather than relying on another long Mack touchdown.

There’s a defensive case for the visitors, too. Our grades give Arizona State’s defense an A-, matching Texas Tech’s A- offense. But the Sun Devils’ 55-19 loss to Baylor immediately before the Hawaii win is a substantial counterweight. We rate their defense highly, but their results have been uneven enough that the running game may need to do more than simply keep pace.

What matters at a total of 48.5

The posted total puts the spotlight on how these teams generate points. Our projections have Texas Tech producing about 230 passing yards and 154 rushing yards, suggesting contributions from both parts of its attack. Arizona State’s strong defensive grade gives Texas Tech a meaningful challenge, while the Sun Devils’ more limited projected rushing output could make their own scoring drives harder to sustain.

Turnovers are the complication. Texas Tech’s last game showed how takeaways can supply points without sustained offensive production. Meanwhile, both teams have gone over their respective totals in three of five games this season. All of those games carried higher totals than this week’s number, so the recent results offer little support for assuming a low-scoring game at 48.5. Arizona State’s defensive evaluation is the counterweight; whether Texas Tech has to earn its points through long drives or gets more sudden opportunities matters to this scoring outlook.

The matchup in perspective

Texas Tech’s stronger overall grade, unbeaten record and projected first-down advantage give it a credible foundation for building a cushion. The Colorado win shows why bettors still need to distinguish that foundation from the extra lift supplied by four interceptions. Arizona State’s best counter is to turn its rushing production into repeatable first downs, with a defense that plays closer to our strong evaluation than its Baylor result. The key is whether the Sun Devils can sustain enough possessions to make Texas Tech build its margin drive by drive, rather than letting takeaways accelerate it.
