Chicago enters Week 1 with the clearer statistical edge, but the betting question isn’t simply whether the Bears are better than the Panthers. It’s whether that advantage is enough to justify laying a field goal on the road.

The DraftKings market snapshot, observed at 12:38 a.m. EDT Saturday, listed Chicago as a 3-point favorite at -118 and Carolina +3 at -102. The total was 47.5, with both sides priced at -110.
Chicago has the stronger production outlook
Our team projections give Chicago the more productive offensive profile. The Bears project for 363.2 total yards, including 225.9 passing and 137.3 rushing. Carolina comes in at 312.1 total yards, with 193.8 through the air and 118.3 on the ground.
That gap helps explain why Chicago is favored, but a three-point spread still leaves little room for a sluggish road performance. Carolina doesn’t need to match the Bears yard for yard to stay inside the number. The Panthers need to keep Chicago from turning its advantages into sustained drives and short fields.
Recent form adds some balance
The teams’ last 10-game results make the matchup less straightforward. Chicago went 6-4 outright and 8-2 against the spread over that stretch. Carolina was 4-6 outright but covered six times. Those are historical results entering a new season, though they show the Panthers were often more competitive against the line than their record suggested.
The total brings another wrinkle. Six of Chicago’s last 10 games finished under their listed totals, as did seven of Carolina’s last 10. A season reset limits how heavily those results should be weighted, but they’re still useful context with Sunday’s number sitting just below 48.
Rome Odunze’s status matters
The latest injury report lists Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze as questionable with a calf injury. Odunze said he expects to play, according to ESPN’s Friday report, but his official designation remains questionable. As an expected starting receiver, his availability matters to Chicago’s passing outlook.
Chicago also lists quarterback Tyson Bagent and safety Xavier Woods as questionable. Carolina linebacker Patrick Jones II has been ruled out with a back injury.

Where the spread gets interesting
Chicago’s projected yardage advantage is meaningful, but the market is already asking the Bears to win by more than a field goal once the -118 price is included. Carolina’s recent ability to stay competitive against the spread keeps this from being a simple better-team-versus-worse-team decision, while Odunze’s final status remains the personnel update to watch.
