Cincinnati brings the more convincing passing-game profile, but covering on the road will require more than another efficient afternoon from Joe Burrow. Pittsburgh has to disrupt Burrow and his receivers while finding enough offense of its own after a turnover-filled Week 2. Whether the Steelers can protect Aaron Rodgers and sustain drives is the central question in this AFC North matchup.
Cincinnati’s passing game sets the terms
The Bengals are coming off a 20-6 win over Houston in which Ja’Marr Chase caught seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Burrow completed 20 of 31 attempts for 207 yards, while Tee Higgins added five catches for 95 yards. It was a clear step forward for Chase after he had been held to two catches for 12 yards in the opener.
The available quarterback and receiver props expect Burrow to carry the larger passing workload. His passing-yard line is 252.5, compared with 218.5 for Rodgers. Chase’s receiving line is 76.5 yards, while Higgins sits at 56.5, framing the matchup around Cincinnati’s established receiving options.
Our team projections point in the same direction without making the gap overwhelming. Cincinnati projects for roughly 337 total yards and 236 passing yards, compared with about 318 total yards and 208 through the air for Pittsburgh. The Bengals also carry an A offensive grade, while Pittsburgh’s defense has a B.
Pittsburgh needs a cleaner offensive response
The Steelers fell 20-3 at New England last week. Rodgers was sacked four times, threw an interception and fumbled twice while finishing with 187 passing yards. DK Metcalf managed four catches for 27 yards, and Pittsburgh has scored only one touchdown in 25 possessions through two games.
Pittsburgh’s clearest statistical counterweight may be on the ground. Our projections give the Steelers about 110 rushing yards, slightly above Cincinnati’s 101. That path comes with an availability question: lead running back Jaylen Warren is questionable with a shoulder injury after being limited Friday. Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is also questionable with a foot injury.
The latest injury report adds uncertainty in the secondary, where Pittsburgh cornerbacks Jamel Dean and Joey Porter Jr. are questionable. Their statuses matter against a receiving group built around Chase and Higgins, although there’s no confirmed replacement context in the available reporting.

How the spread fits
The latest spread makes Cincinnati a 3.5-point road favorite. That asks the Bengals to win by at least four, leaving Pittsburgh room to challenge the favorite by keeping the game within one possession even if Cincinnati produces more offense.
Recent results offer some support for Cincinnati’s ability to beat market expectations, although the sample reaches into last season. Across their last 10 games, the Bengals are 7-3 against the spread and Pittsburgh is 5-5. Both teams are 5-5 outright over those respective windows, so Cincinnati’s stronger spread record hasn’t simply followed a dominant run of wins.
The 42.5 total reflects the tension between Cincinnati’s playmakers and Pittsburgh’s early offensive struggles. Seven of the Bengals’ last 10 games have finished under their closing totals, as have six of Pittsburgh’s last 10. That’s useful scoring context, but the Steelers’ ability to avoid short drives and turnovers should be more revealing than the trend alone.
Final assessment
Cincinnati has the clearer route to creating separation: let Burrow work through Chase and Higgins against a Pittsburgh secondary carrying multiple questionable designations. The counterweight is a road spread beyond a field goal and a modest projected rushing edge for Pittsburgh that could shorten the game and keep the margin tight.
The decisive factor is whether Rodgers and the Steelers can produce sustained drives without repeating last week’s pressure and turnover problems. If Pittsburgh’s offense keeps sending its defense back onto the field, Cincinnati’s passing-game advantage becomes much harder to contain.
