Blackhawks vs. Hurricanes preview: Chicago’s offense shapes the total question

Carolina’s advantage over Chicago starts with how much offense each team is likely to generate, but that doesn’t make the scoring total a simple extension of the favorite’s case. The Hurricanes are facing a winless road team that needed a goal in the final minute just to get on the board Thursday. Whether Chicago can sustain an attack is a central question for both its upset chances and the shape of Saturday’s game.

Chicago needs to spend less time chasing

AP reported that Roman Kantserov scored Chicago’s only goal with 49 seconds left in Thursday’s 4–1 loss at Tampa Bay. Arvid Soderblom made 31 saves. The Blackhawks remain without a road win, with seven regulation losses and one overtime loss, and have lost five straight overall.

Our shot projections put Chicago at about 23 and Carolina at roughly 33. That is a substantial volume gap, even though shots alone cannot tell us how dangerous the chances will be. For the Blackhawks, a few isolated scoring opportunities may not be enough to keep the game competitive if the Hurricanes repeatedly get their own attack going.

The projected goalie matchup sharpens that challenge. Pyotr Kochetkov remains unconfirmed for Carolina, but our logs give him a .946 save percentage across his five most recent appearances, all starts. That stretch includes two shutouts, though he allowed three goals in his latest outing against Nashville. Chicago would be facing a goalie with a strong recent record if he gets the assignment.

Carolina’s latest win had a warning inside it

AP reported that William Carrier put Carolina ahead on a rebound from Sebastian Aho’s shot in Thursday’s 5–3 win over the Islanders. Aho had two assists, and Jalen Chatfield added an empty-net goal. Earlier, the Hurricanes had exploited a New York miscue and a defender caught up ice to take a quick two-goal lead.

The counterweight is that Carolina didn’t keep that lead intact. The Islanders tied the game twice, and the score was still 3–3 entering the third period. Brandon Bussi played that night; Kochetkov’s projected assignment would be a different goaltending setup. Chicago needs to create enough pressure to test that vulnerability, rather than spend most of the night defending.

Spencer Knight is Chicago’s projected goalie, also awaiting confirmation. His five most recent appearances, all starts, produced a .898 save percentage, with four goals allowed in each of the latest two. That makes sustained offensive-zone time valuable for Chicago in two ways: it creates chances to score and gives its defense and goalie a break.

A steep moneyline and a separate total question

DraftKings’ moneyline lists Carolina at -470 and Chicago at +360, with a total of 6.5 in Saturday morning’s snapshot. Carolina has seven wins in its last ten games, compared with Chicago’s two. The projected shot gap and recent goalie samples reinforce why Carolina is favored. At such a steep price, though, the task is to assess how reliably the Hurricanes can maintain control, with Thursday’s surrendered lead a reason to examine that closely.

The total depends on more than Carolina’s scoring potential. Ten of the Hurricanes’ 18 games have gone under this season, while nine of Chicago’s 17 have gone over. A low Chicago contribution could leave Carolina doing most of the scoring work; another exchange of goals like Thursday’s Islanders game would produce a different test of the threshold.

Sharpest Bets rates the side at two stars and the total at three. Chicago’s ability to sustain possessions is the thread connecting both markets. If the Blackhawks can turn more shifts into an attack, they can test Carolina’s control and contribute to the scoring. If they spend the night chasing, the favorite’s case may strengthen while the total still asks how much Carolina can produce on its own.
