Boston College’s best chance to stay close starts with controlling possessions and keeping SMU’s passing game on the sideline. The Mustangs have the more explosive profile and a sizable projected yardage edge, but their recent mistakes offer the Eagles a path to making a three-touchdown spread uncomfortable.
Boston College needs its ground game to travel
Quarterback Mason McKenzie gave Boston College a different dimension in its 21-14 loss to Virginia Tech. He rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns while completing 11 of 23 passes for 111 yards in difficult wind and rain. The Eagles led in the fourth quarter before allowing the final 15 points.
That quarterback-running production offers a plausible way to extend drives and reduce SMU’s opportunities. Boston College may need it because our projections show a clear production gap: roughly 320 total yards for the Eagles compared with 480 for the Mustangs. We also project about 210 passing yards for Boston College and 330 for SMU.
SMU has the passing volume to create separation
Kevin Jennings completed 33 of 39 passes for 464 yards and three touchdowns as SMU beat Missouri State 34-24, becoming the program’s career passing leader. The Mustangs finished with 592 total yards and a 29-14 advantage in first downs, but two early turnovers helped put them in a 10-0 hole.
That performance captures both sides of this matchup. SMU has the production to build a substantial lead, and our yardage projections give the Mustangs an advantage of roughly 160 yards. At the same time, the early mistakes against Missouri State showed how a heavy favorite can let an opponent hang around despite controlling most of the game.

What the spread demands from SMU
The latest market makes SMU a 21-point favorite. That number asks the Mustangs to do more than confirm they’re the stronger team. They’ll need to turn their passing and total-yardage advantages into sustained separation while avoiding the turnovers, penalties and missed opportunities that complicated their latest win.
The 55.5 total also puts Boston College’s preferred style in focus. Each of the Eagles’ first four games this season finished under its listed total, including the weather-affected loss to Virginia Tech. That doesn’t make another lower-scoring game automatic, but it helps explain why controlling possessions and limiting SMU’s passing opportunities matter so much.
SMU’s strongest case is its ability to create explosive passing production against an Eagles offense projected to generate considerably less yardage. The counterweight is execution: another uneven start could give McKenzie and the Boston College running game time to shorten the contest. The decisive factor is whether the Eagles can keep the game on the ground or get pushed into a high-volume passing chase.
