Browns–Steelers: Matching Records, a Different Test in Pittsburgh

Cleveland and Pittsburgh arrive at their rematch with matching 5-2 records, and each has covered the spread in five of seven games this season. The Browns won the first meeting 27-24; now the Steelers are 3.5-point favorites at home. Pittsburgh has won three straight since that defeat, but Cleveland just showed how dangerous it can be when Deshaun Watson gets production from both his receivers and running game.

Cleveland has more than another late escape to build on

Watson’s fifth fourth-quarter game-winning drive of the season finished Cleveland’s 27-24 win at Tennessee on Sunday. His 36-yard connection with Harold Fannin Jr. set up Andre Szmyt’s winning field goal as time expired. The Browns had fallen behind 14-0, so this was another game that demanded a response.

The production before that final drive matters just as much for this matchup. Watson threw for 308 yards and ran for a touchdown, Quinshon Judkins rushed for 96 yards and two scores, and KC Concepcion caught eight passes for 129 yards. Cleveland had several ways to move the ball rather than relying on one decisive play.

There is a current concern on the offensive line. Right tackle Tytus Howard was evaluated for a concussion during that game and did not participate in Wednesday's practice. That practice update is worth following as the Browns prepare for Pittsburgh; it does not establish his Sunday availability.

Pittsburgh’s running game gives its offense a foundation

The Steelers returned from Paris with a 16-10 win over New Orleans, helped by Jaylen Warren‘s 101 rushing yards. Aaron Rodgers completed 19 of 30 passes for 212 yards, including a 51-yard gain to DK Metcalf that helped set up his touchdown pass to Darnell Washington. Chris Boswell supplied three field goals.

Pittsburgh also held the Saints to 18 rushing yards and got a red-zone interception from Payton Wilson. Those were specific ways the defense protected a small lead. The other side of that performance is that New Orleans still threw for 278 yards. Cleveland’s latest passing production makes that a meaningful counterweight to the Steelers’ success against the run.

Our grades favor Pittsburgh on both sides of the ball: B grades for its offense and defense against Cleveland’s C+ grades. The team projections show nearly even rushing output, about 107 yards for Pittsburgh and 105 for Cleveland, with a larger passing difference of roughly 208 yards to 171. We see the clearer offensive separation through the air, while the Browns’ recent performance shows why Pittsburgh cannot count on a quiet day from Watson.

A low total meets two different recent scoring pictures

DraftKings’ total is 39.5. The earlier meeting produced 51 points, and Cleveland’s latest win again featured productive passing and rushing. Pittsburgh also scored 34 against Indianapolis and 26 at Tampa Bay before the lower-scoring game in France. Those results give the scoring discussion more range than last Sunday’s Steelers score alone suggests.

There is a credible restraint on that picture, too. Cleveland beat Baltimore 13-10 before visiting Tennessee, while Pittsburgh’s last win depended on field goals and a takeaway near its own goal line. The Steelers’ stronger defensive grade and our more modest passing outlook for Cleveland put the Browns’ ability to repeat last week’s offensive balance at the center of the total discussion.

Pittsburgh brings the stronger overall matchup assessment and a winning run into this rematch. Cleveland brings a previous win over these opponents and fresh evidence that its offense can recover from trouble in several ways. For bettors weighing the favorite’s margin, Pittsburgh’s ability to limit Watson while maintaining Warren’s ground production is the clearest issue to track. The Browns’ recent passing success is the main challenge to that case.
