Bruins vs. Stars: Boston’s scoring streak meets a tougher test

Boston has scored at least four goals in each of its five straight wins, but Dallas offers a different kind of test. The Stars have kept all eight of their games under the sportsbook total this season, and Jake Oettinger has allowed just four goals across his past five appearances. Tuesday’s Bruins–Stars matchup puts Boston’s scoring surge against Dallas’ ability to keep games quiet—and makes the 5.5-goal total as interesting as the favorite’s price.

Boston brings more than a winning streak

The Bruins are 7-2-0 and finish their four-game road trip in Dallas. They’ve already beaten San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles on the trip, scoring 14 goals across those three games. Still, the latest result needs a little context: Boston beat the Kings 4-1 on Saturday with two empty-net goals. Marat Khusnutdinov broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period before Boston pulled away.

That’s a useful distinction against a Dallas team that won’t need to match Boston’s recent scoring pace to be competitive. DraftKings’ current moneyline makes Dallas a -170 favorite, with Boston at +142. Boston owns the better record, but the matchup also asks how well its attack travels against a team that has allowed so little.

Boston has rewarded moneyline backers over a longer stretch, too: our historical betting data shows 51 wins in 90 games over the past year and a profit of 16.82 units on flat one-unit wagers. That gives the Bruins’ success some context beyond this five-game streak, though those returns came at a range of prices rather than today’s +142.

One personnel issue matters: Adam Pellerin of NESN reported Monday that Pavel Zacha is a game-time decision for the Dallas matchup with an upper-body injury. His availability is worth watching because it affects Boston’s options at center.

The goaltending gives 5.5 some substance

If the expected Jeremy Swayman–Jake Oettinger matchup holds, both teams bring strong recent work in net. Oettinger has stopped 96.2% of the shots he’s faced over his past five appearances; Swayman has stopped 92.9% over his past five. Those are short samples, but they give the scoring discussion more substance than Dallas’ under streak alone.

Oettinger most recently stopped all 19 Chicago shots in Dallas’ 4-0 win Saturday. Dallas also outshot the Blackhawks 32-19, so that result combined clean goaltending with a manageable workload.

Our team projections put both teams around 26 shots on goal, with roughly three power-play opportunities apiece. That suggests fairly even shooting volume rather than a clear barrage from either side. Special-teams chances remain a route to more scoring, though, and Boston’s five-game run of four-plus goals is the strongest counterweight to the recent goaltending numbers.

Dallas’ own scoring also belongs in the discussion at 5.5: the Stars have scored two goals or fewer in four of their eight games this season. Their under streak reflects more than goal prevention, even if Saturday’s four-goal performance shows they can supply offense, too.

Our historical betting data shows that under bets on Dallas’ eight games this season returned a profit of 6.90 units using flat one-unit wagers. Boston’s recent results have been less one-sided: five of its nine games this season finished under. At today’s 5.5, the useful tension is between Dallas’ goal prevention and a Bruins attack that has recently been much more productive—not simply the length of the under streak.

What matters most

Dallas’ recent goal prevention gives its favorite status a credible foundation, but Boston brings both sustained scoring and strong recent work from Swayman. The Bruins aren’t projected to have a large shooting-volume advantage, so maintaining their scoring surge against Oettinger would mean making more of a similar number of opportunities. For the total, Dallas’ uneven offense matters alongside its goaltending: Boston’s scoring streak alone doesn’t describe the full scoring outlook at 5.5. The clearest test is how much of the Bruins’ recent production carries over against this resistance, especially after empty-net goals padded their latest win.
