Buccaneers vs. Cowboys: Dallas has the firepower, but can it create separation?

Dallas has the firepower to make Thursday night difficult for Tampa Bay, but creating a comfortable cushion is another matter. The Cowboys just needed a late touchdown to win a game in which they scored 34 points, while the winless Buccaneers stayed within three points of Green Bay despite two costly interceptions. With Dallas an 8.5-point favorite at DraftKings, the interesting question is whether its passing attack can produce enough separation—or whether its defense leaves Tampa Bay room to hang around.

Dallas can move the ball. Can it control the game?

CeeDee Lamb gave the Cowboys a spectacular route out of trouble on October 4: 17 catches for 189 yards, including the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left in a 34-30 victory over Houston. Dak Prescott threw for 335 yards, and Javonte Williams supplied three rushing touchdowns. Dallas has threats through the air and on the ground, rather than one player Tampa Bay can focus on stopping.

Our grades capture both the attraction and the concern: Dallas earns an A on offense but a C on defense. Tampa Bay’s defense grades better at B-, while its offense receives a C. That makes this more interesting than the teams’ records alone—Dallas is 2-2 and Tampa Bay is 0-4—might suggest. The Cowboys’ strongest unit meets the Buccaneers’ strongest unit, while Dallas’s weaker side offers Tampa Bay a possible foothold.

Our team projections put Dallas at roughly 370 total yards, including about 255 passing yards, compared with around 300 total yards and 190 passing yards for Tampa Bay. The rushing outlook is much closer, at about 115 yards for Dallas and 110 for Tampa Bay. The biggest expected difference in production is through the air, making Prescott’s ability to keep drives moving a central part of the matchup.

Tampa Bay needs more from the chances it gets

Baker Mayfield is out with a thumb injury, and Jalon Daniels starts at quarterback. In the 17-14 loss to Green Bay on October 4, Daniels threw two interceptions that led to 10 Packers points in his first career start. Tampa Bay later forced two fourth-quarter turnovers but couldn’t turn either opportunity into the winning score. That game showed a route to staying competitive, but also how easily wasted possessions can undo it.

The Buccaneers also have safety Antoine Winfield Jr. out with a rib injury. His absence is a personnel concern alongside the quarterback change, even with Tampa Bay’s stronger defensive grade. For Daniels and the offense, protecting possessions and doing more with the openings Dallas allows would give the Bucs a more credible path to keeping this close.

The spread asks more than a Dallas win

Dallas’s offensive quality and expected passing production make the favorite’s position understandable. Covering that spread, though, requires enough stops to turn that production into breathing room. Tampa Bay’s main counterweight is its better defensive grade; its biggest obstacle is getting sufficient offense from Daniels after his costly mistakes against Green Bay. The deciding issue is whether Dallas can pair its scoring threats with a steadier defensive performance, rather than needing another late rescue.
