Buccaneers vs. Panthers Preview: Can Carolina Keep Its Offense Rolling?

Carolina’s balanced win in Philadelphia gives the Panthers a convincing starting point, but there’s more to this matchup than the records suggest. They’re three-point favorites after Bryce Young and Chuba Hubbard delivered through the air and on the ground. Tampa Bay arrives at 1-5, yet our projections point to nearly equal yardage—and a rushing advantage that could make separation harder than Carolina’s recent momentum suggests.

Carolina brings a balanced attack

Young threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns, and Hubbard ran for 120 yards and a score as Carolina beat Philadelphia 25-14 on Sunday. Both touchdown passes went to Tommy Tremble. That combination gives the Panthers a concrete blueprint: production through the air without having to ask Young to carry the entire attack.

There’s an important bit of context, though. Philadelphia played without Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, so Carolina’s ability to manage that game came against a depleted opponent. The Panthers are 3-2 and have won their last two games, but Sunday’s success alone doesn’t settle how much separation they can create here.

Tampa Bay’s quarterback picture changes the comparison

The Buccaneers lost 26-19 to Pittsburgh in overtime after leading by 13 points in the fourth quarter. Jalon Daniels, filling in for Baker Mayfield, threw two fourth-quarter interceptions that helped Pittsburgh recover. Tampa Bay had built a lead, but those late turnovers changed the game.

Scott Smith of the Buccaneers’ official site reported that Mayfield was a full practice participant Wednesday despite his right-thumb injury. Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported that Bucky Irving returned to practice Thursday after an illness, while Fox Sports’ Greg Auman reported that Emeka Egbuka worked on the side with a trainer because of concussion and foot issues. Those practice updates keep Tampa Bay’s offensive personnel worth following ahead of Sunday.

With Mayfield at quarterback, our analysis rates Tampa Bay’s offense B+, compared with Carolina’s C. The recent scoring results offer a counterweight: the Buccaneers finished below 20 points in four of their six most recent games this season. There’s a stronger offensive assessment here than the record suggests, but Tampa Bay still needs to translate it into points.

A close yardage outlook complicates the 44.5 total

Our yardage projections put both teams at roughly 310 total yards, with different routes to that production. Carolina projects for about 210 passing yards and 100 rushing yards; Tampa Bay comes in around 180 passing and 130 rushing. The Buccaneers’ ground-game outlook is the clearest statistical counterweight to Carolina’s recent momentum.

For the 44.5-point total at DraftKings, the higher-scoring case starts with Young’s latest performance and our favorable assessment of Tampa Bay’s offense. Carolina’s scoring also gives that case some substance beyond one good afternoon: the Panthers scored at least 25 points in four of their five most recent games this season. Pulling the other way are the modest yardage outlook and the Buccaneers’ recent difficulty scoring.

Carolina games have also gone Under in 10 of 16 games over the past year, producing a historical profit of 3.24 units from flat one-unit Under bets. That spans seasons and different totals, so it adds background to the scoring discussion rather than establishing an edge at 44.5. The tension is between Carolina’s recent scoring production and an outlook that calls for less passing yardage from Young than he delivered in Philadelphia.

Carolina has the stronger recent results and a demonstrated way to balance its offense. Tampa Bay’s projected rushing advantage, however, gives the Buccaneers a credible route to staying competitive despite their record. The key distinction is whether Carolina can sustain its recent scoring with more modest passing production, while Tampa Bay turns its ground-game outlook into better offensive returns. That’s the useful test of the favorite—and the total—rather than treating either the records or last Sunday’s results as the whole story.
